Yitzchok 2 #1 Posted April 27 Hi, I have a Wheel horse 312-8 and if i press the clutch too fast or i am on bumpy ground sometimes the belt flips into the space next to it and then the clutch does nothing when i push it and the tractor starts lurching, am i missing a guard there? ebinmaine 78,498 #2 Posted April 27 What's the age and part number of your belt? It looks thin.
953 nut 65,593 #3 Posted April 28 There is a belt guide attached to the right foot rest, is it in place?
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 12,183 #4 Posted April 28 Adjust these guides so they just clear the belt when the belt is tight. They will force a good condition belt to behave.
Bill D 2,793 #5 Posted April 28 (edited) That looks like a 1/2" wide belt. Should be an 82" x 5/8". Also, the belt on the PTO should be on the larger pulley closer to the engine. Edited April 28 by Bill D 2

On both counts. And any belt that far down in the V groove acts like it is too long, causing shifting issues. The top of a new belt should ride just above the OD of the pulley.....
peter lena 9,859 #7 Posted April 28 @Yitzchok in addition to the belt , would also ensure / verify lubrication to any / all related movement areas ? regularly see , hear linkages trying to move in rust , regular related is belt bouncing , and sudden release , causes erratic response , one of my base line , repetitive eliminations . put that in the same class as , rusted choke / throttle cables , simple / easy , maybe a spring assist ? pete

I don't know, a few years ago (before i started using it) i think the old one snapped and my older brother switched it.

My Mackissic chipper shredder is driven by the smaller outside groove too.

Multiple photos of the entire belt system might help us see the problem. Remove the carburetor and clean it out completely. I wonder if you messed up the adjusting screws or the carburetor body with all of the adjusting.

The screws were fine, cleaned it out and it works fine now.
