starter/generator

Hello All  I'm looking for information on how to bench test a starter/ generator. This tractor does have a voltage regulator which is not in the best of shape. The current tractor setup  is well passed trying to test on the tractor. So I am just wanting to see if this unit is any good before maybe sending it out for refirb. Also is it possible to get a wiring diagram for a starter/generator.

There isn't really a good way to bench test them unless you have the proper test apparatus. About the only thing you can do is apply +12 volts to the A terminal and ground the case. If it spins chances are good that it will charge.

Most often a good cleaning is all that is required. Possibly brushes and and bearings.

If in doubt about the regulator just replace it.

Need the model of the tractor for the correct wiring diagram but here is a basic one.

Attached are some of the manuals I have.

Put 12 volts om he A terminal and ground the case the genny should spin up fast..then remove the power it should slowly spin down.  Try again but after you remove the voltage ground the F terminal the genny should stop quickly.

thanks that gives some info to work with. As to the model of the tractor all the serial number plates are long gone, so i m  guessing its 700 uni drive model late 60's or early 70's

:(

SGs were last used early '68 on tractors with a Kohler. This a Briggs motor by chance? They were used with SGs into the early '70s.

If so that wiring diagram is not correct as its for a early to mid sixties model.
