856: voltage regulator wiring question.

Recommended Posts

Afternoon,

Based on 856 wiring diagram .. the middle voltage regulator wire.. to make sure I read the diagram correctly … the middle voltage regulator wire… goes to the positive battery terminal then the positive battery terminal goes to the B on ignition.. is this correct way or do I wire the voltage regulator middle wire directly to ignition Battery terminal?

12/14ga wire Center regulator terminal to the Battery +

4/6ga wire Battery Plus to B terminal on ignition switch

You need to seriously clean up regulator terminals

And any other connections in similar condition. It doesn’t take a lot of rust to seriously impede the flow of those poor little electrons trying to do their job!

My answer above assumes this is an original 4 terminal regulator.  You really should  clean the terminal and make sure it says BAT not GEN...On 3 wire regulators the  center  terminal is GEN and goes to the A terminal on the genny.

While you cleaning up the regulator. Repair that connection on that new switch!

Battery plus - you mean positive battery terminal to ignition?
Some light 220 grit sand paper the terminal to clean up the rust?

Where would the words BAT and Gen be.. on the circled pieces?

when you say center terminal GEN.. where is the A terminal on generator that that connects to?

Which connection repair? This one ?

The marks are stamped into the regulator terminal.  Wire brush?  As rusty as the one is it may have corroded the stamping away.  Is yours a 3 or 4 terminal regulator (the 4th terminal is on the bottom if it is a 4  term and a light wire runs from it to the A terminal on the Generator body

Heavy 4/6 ga wire Battery + terminal to the Ignition switch.

There are two terminals on the generator body and there is a stampd letter next to them an A which has two wires one light one heavy and and F one wire from the F terminal on the regulator

There are normally only two wires here I assume the new red one is for the fuel pump you are installing and is not the new red one in the regulator picture that would be wrong.

Yes. Those wire connections are junk. Dirty, exposed wires. Bent almost 90°. All of that makes heat. The only one that looks like it might be ok ok is the main red wire with the yellow connector.

Only see 3 terminals on voltage regulator.
light wire as in for headlights ?

The old red wire is coil to I on ignition.

new wire is fuel pump to I on ignition.

Old black wire is to the jewel generator Warning 856 dash- to the I on ignition.

If the bare rusty terminal cleans up to show "L" Then you have a 4 terminal system.  AGAIN... is there a terminal and wire coming out the bottom of your regulator????

When i say light I mean light gauge wire...

Where does the new red wire with yellow crimp terminate on your regulator go.

Look I am getting old an I try to use a variety of wire colors makes tracing things  much easier.... not all red

Don’t see any L…

the new red wire with yellow on middle voltage regulator.. goes from there to battery + on battery itself .. then the battery wire to the B on ignition.
there is this wire underneath my voltage regulator.. see picture.. which I think goes to the starter gen nut terminal on top of the starter .as seen in my 2nd picture here .:  .. does that mean it’s a 4 terminal? If so.. what exactly do all the terminals .. 3 on front where red middle wire do and are for exactly?

You might not want to work on my tractors, I use all black except for the positive battery cables, granted black is all I have to work with at the moment so that also plays a part

Makes troublesooting soooooooooooo easy, the problem is the BLACK wire,       can't go wrong.            :ychain:

you have a 4 terminal regulator.  From the top of this picture .."F"  Field  wire goes to the F terminal on the generator body  Center is Battery goes to the Positive (+) terminal on the battery , Bottom rusty one is the L load terminal (could power your cigar lighter). The wire coming out from under neath goes to the Genny A terminal. If you cleanup the Generator body you will see the stamped F and A marking the two terminals.  A has the heavy and light wire.

as mentioned above you really need to clean things up.  Makes wiring easier.

It looks like you might need to redo the bottom wire on your regulator

I had to do some electrical work on a new motor home that was a prototype of Winnebago's new design. Every wire behind the dash was white!

So is F the wire here I circled- that goes to top or leftest terminal voltage regulator.

The wire underneath- that goes to generator- does that power the voltage regulator?

Yes the Field is correctly wired.  F on regulator to F on the generator body.  I don't see anything wrong from the picture about the wire coming from under the Regulator to the A terminal on the generator body (the thinner wire hooked up there with a heavy  one ) it doesn't power the generator what it does is takes out put from the Generator A terminal and regulates the amount and feeds it to  to the battery when it is in charge mode (ie,the engine running.)
