I’ve always oiled mine. If it has oil on it, mice generally won’t chew it up.

I have always oiled my prefilters, about a teaspoon of oil applied to one side, turn it inside-out, put it in a plastic bag and massage the oil into the entire prefilter. Wring out any excess oil into the badg, turn it right side out and apply it to your filter.

This is from the Kohler operaters manual.

Handy Don

PREfilters, yes (typically plastic foam).

Filters, no (typically paper).

If you oil it (very advantageous), roll in up in a piece of newspaper and squeeze to get out all the excess oil.  This way you won't soak the underlying filter with oil.  You'll be pleased with how many contaminents the oil filters out.
