Governor set up in K301

Recommended Posts

Hello

I am resurrecting a barn find 1985 312-8 for an old gent. It was his father’s. Been in the barn since 1996.

i dragged it out and brought it home. Some soap and water did wonders. Pulled the tin and cleaned out the mouse nests.

bought a battery. Replaced the starter. Good compression. No spark. Had a used coil , new condenser and points for my k321. All the same.

set at .020 with feelers. Now no fuel to carb. Replaced pump and fuel line from tank. Now fuel. Won’t fire. Pulled the carb. Took the bowl off. Filled with shellac.

Bought an aftermarket #26 carb. Put it on. Had to shorten the new rod from carb to governor arm to fit. Fires right up. I can’t seem to get the governor set right. Held open throttle and turned rod CCW until stop hit. Tightened bolt. Fired up. Give it throttle and then after a bit the rpm’s increase on its own. I’m at wits end. Help!

Fire it up and running at idle, use your finger to open the throttle. You should feel the governor arm pushing back to try and close the carb. This isn't a guess thing as it should push fairly hard and a noticeable force. Most likely good if it's just creeping up instead of full blast high RPM

Without loosening the clamp try holding the pin with pliers and try to move the gov arm. It needs to be locked tight to the pin

Make sure the throttle cable conduit is locked tight.

It does go to high rpm if I move the throttle up past 1000 rpm on my tach.

Thank You for the reply.

It looks like you are on the right track, but just in case, here is a .pdf file from the K-Series service manual concerning governors.
