953 nut 64,817 #3 Posted 3 hours ago Astroturf had to be used because they were unable to keep natural grass from dying. The initial stadium design featured thousands of clear Lucite windows, which created intense glare, making it nearly impossible for baseball players to track fly balls. To fix the glare they painted the roof panels white, which subsequently deprived the turf of sunlight and caused the grass to die, leaving a dirt field that was painted green. The Solution; Monsanto developed a synthetic surface that was installed in 1966. The high-profile installation in the "Astrodome" led to the product being branded as AstroTurf.
