morels are showing up

If you remember, last spring I posted that I was trying to cultivate morel mushrooms.  For the past four years, as i find morels, I washed them and threw the water in the area pictured below.  I have found 5 to 7 morels the past two years.   Last year I expanded my seeding and used a slurry recipe  that I found on the internet that utilized karo syrup and ashes added to the morel water and then diluted with water and poured over the ground.  

 

Just a few minutes ago I checked and there's 4 morels.  They pretty small and are found just left of the wooden fence post. I've left them in hopes of them getting a little bigger.  We have been awful dry and I have watered this patch a couple of times from my well.   Suppose to rain off and on this week.  

 

I think I'll go out and cover them with an aeriated plastic container and maybe give them a little drink.

Yesterday evening I did check on the morels found a 5th.  Those haven't gotten any bigger.  However, this morning, I jumped the fence onto my neighbor's land and found an additional five bringing the  total to ten.  The three I located this morning appear to me to be taller than when I found them. 

 

Do mushrooms grow for a few days?  I always assumed that when a fellow found a mushroom, it is what it is.  This is unusually early for us to have mushrooms.  But we've been unusually warm as well. 

 

The picture, from my neighbor's side of the fence shows the four cups over some of the mushrooms.  Fortunately, the neighbor's cows are at another farm at this time but once the new fence on the other side of their farm is replaced, they will be back home.  That will destroy my opportunity for mushrooms from that side.  80% of the morels came from across the fence.  I'm thinking (hoping) they will let section of this little area during March and April--we are pretty good friends. 

 

Rains tonight certainly won't hurt.
