FarmallFarmer09 22 #1 Posted March 22 Im currently restoring my 1971 charger 12, and i wanted to know what the best paint is for the rims. Ive heard Rust-Oleum almond or linen white, I just want to know which one looks more like the oem cream color. I also want to know where i can find the plastic dash piece for the charger 12 with the cigarette lighter hole. (2nd picture is a new one from a buddy of mines tractor.) Thanks!

rmaynard 17,169 #8 Posted March 23 Just like Wheel Horse red, any red will do as long as you like it. The same goes for wheels. As long as it's not bright white, any off white will work.

FarmallFarmer09 22 #15 Posted March 27 Would the engine get hot enough to melt normal paint? Not high temp?

The cooling fins should have ONE LIGHT COAT of high temperature paint. Paint will act as an insulation preventing the heat from being transferred to the moving air passing over them. WHX?? 56,594 #17 Posted March 28 4 hours ago, FarmallFarmer09 said: hot enough to melt normal paint? No not unless you have some fin plugging that reduces cooling. For a putt around resto painting fins will have no adverse effect. If you are going to work the snot out of it yes just a light coat or nothing. No head paint no matter what the tractor is used for. This motor @Achto just painted got it with just regular paint and will only darken or burn off around the exhaust but for a show tractor will be just fine. 2
lynnmor 8,827 #18 Posted March 28 Some engine paints will tolerate higher temperatures than the usual decorative spray paints found in hardware stores, but the colors are more limited.
Racinbob 12,959 #19 Posted March 28 For me the Rusty almond is too dark. White isn't my choice either. So I mixed the two. One part almond and two parts white through a cheapo HVLP is what I ended up with.
squonk 46,561 #20 Posted March 28 Kohler, Tecky, Briggsy all painted their heads from the factory. Whilst I agree, too much paint would be a deterrent to cooling a couple of coats aren't going to amount to a hill of beans!
WHX?? 56,594 #21 Posted March 28 (edited) I like the way no painted heads look Squonkies. The painted washers kinda pop. Dan reamed me a new one for painting the one on this 1055 but it was that really thin gold stuff. Really don't see it all said and done.
