Balance gears on K series

Ok, these engines are getting old! (As young as they may seem!!) 40+ y/o. What are your thoughts on this? On Brian Millers website, just take off the oil pan and ‘lighten the load!’ Curious to know what you guys think.

Sometimes you get lucky and are able to get the gears out without driving the pins out. 

 

If you do have to drive the pins out, I would use expansion plugs to fill the holes, not RTV.

Ya!! I think it’s a 7/16” hole!!

It's recommended to remove the gears, especially if you can wiggle them at all. While you can inspect the gears make sure they are a newer style do new bearings make sure they are shimmed and timed right. The question remains is it worth doing all that. For most people the answer is no. 

 

You can take the bottom gear out for sure without pulling the pin, the top gear I was not able to remove with the pin so I drove that pin out and then drove that same pin back in from the outside and will cut it off.

I just had the pan off on my cub 169 and thought about taking out the balance gears, but they seemed good and tight and I elected not to mess with it. I may regret that in the future, but I sure hope not

I mean, i have a;

73 14/sunstrand (owned ‘19) summer use, by the hood and rear pan, not much use.

74’ C160/8 speed (owned a week ago!). 

 

I care for these two! I do regular oil changes. 

 

I should remove them as opposed to whats been done to the Wheelhorses over the years? I mean I haven’t owned them since new!
