I had the engine over the holidays because we thought it would be a simple fix. I found the spark plug wire was in the way of the governor, and I pulled the pan just to visually check for anything broken just in case. The flyweights were there, and the governor rod and tab were all in place and moved free, so I didn't dissasemble anything further. This engine has very low hours and I wanted to avoid removing the piston and cam if it wasn't necessary. Today Don cranked it up, and even with the throttle all the way down it runs wide open. I pulled the governor over towards the carb and it has a "catch", meaning if you put a decent amount of pressure against it, it clicks past the catch and throttles down. This only happens when running and everything is smooth and free when not running. Nothing external is binding the governor or throttle. Anybody ever seen this before? I think the governor is bad somehow, but it's so simple that I can't imagine how. When I had the pan off, rotating the engine was enough to make the flyweights move. It just doesn't make sense to me. Don thinks this tractor sat in the dealer shop for a while, and I knew the PO. He rarely used it, and was always running down closed dealerships to find stuff. We're wondering if it always had issues with the governor because the fully functional hour meter shows around 35 hours on it. I will say that visually, the cleanliness of the inside of the engine certainly implies the hours are accurate. No sludge in the pan at all. Gears are all sharp and nothing has any play like an old engine with years of service on it. It looks brand new. Anyway, has anyone ever seen a Kohler governor behave like this?
