The wire from ignition switch to genny "A" terminal is too light gauge.  Probably cause your smoking.  Also your field wire is missing

WH used 6ga wire.  I sometimes use 4ga

I sometimes cheat and use 8 ga. for the heavy starter circuit with no smoke let out.  The missing field wire and everything else 14 Ga or 12 if I'm out of 14. 

 Trolling motor wire works best.

Can buy it by the foot at many places as well.
