December fifteenth is the first day of the celebration of Hanukkah which began at sundown yesterday, “The festival of lights” — a time for family, delicious eats, and stories that remind of hope's enduring glow in the darkest times.

While a great deal of Jewish history can actually be found in the Bible, Hanukkah is one of those festivals that has not been mentioned in the canonized text. The most thorough documentation that recounts the events of the holiday can be found in books called 1 Maccabees and 2 Maccabees.

While the temple oil used to light the menorah should only have been enough for one day, it lasted for eight days and this was celebrated as a miracle. This thread continues in today’s observance of Hanukkah, in the eight-day celebration and the lighting of the candles.

Terrible event in Sydney Australia at a hannuka celebration. No justification at all for such barbarity.

What's not to understand? The Jews are God's chosen people, so Satan will attack them any way he can, at any opportunity.

Actually I was referring to the fact that it is very difficult to own a gun in OZ. You, however are correct.

Im not an expert in religion but it looks like Islam is the new kid on the block, with Judaism being around 4000 years old.

Why do these allegedly peaceful religions insist on destruction of the other?

There are undoubtedly good Muslims as well as good Jews.  But there are enough of the extremist voices to influence those who are too easily led into radicalisation. 

It is the same with all religions, cultures and political pursuasions I guess, make a negative message loud enough and the mainstream will listen. 

Its the human condition, destroy what we don't agree with.

The families of Issac and Ishmael have been fighting ever since they were born. These two were the sons of Abraham. Issac is the head of the Jewish nation and Ishmael is the head of the Islamic nation. So this has been going on for thousands of years.

This is a very over-simplified, and in many ways wrong perspective. Your statement simply paints with too broad of a brush in assuming all religions have the goal of "destroying the others", while it also misses quite a bit of nuance to the particular conflict between Islam and the Jews ( the people, not Judiaism the faith, as the Jews tend to be targeted for their ethnicity without regard for their religious beliefs).

 

The big issue with Islam is that it is created out of whole cloth, and most of what is taught about it inside Islam itself is historically inaccurate, so anyone who questions it must be silenced. For more information on what I mean there I would encourage you to look at the work of Dr. Jay Smith and his Youtube channel Pfander Films. He has been researching this subject longer than I have been alive.

As I said,  I'm no religious scholar.

 

I just struggle to understand how these things arise, seemingly with the blessing of at least faction of the base religion. 

 

Perhaps even talking about it is a problem, any criticism of what Israel is doing in Gaza is seen as antisemitic. Any criticism of Palestinian protests is seen as Islamophobic.

You just can't win unfortunately, so best let them just get on with it as the arguments are so old there is no stopping them.
