Secondary Grounding for Starter.

I've gotten into the habit of adding a second ground cable to the starter housing. Simple, neat and effective. The fastening points already existed... why not?

I've half jokingly told folks more than once that when your wiring harness starts looking like black spaghetti you have just enough ground wires. 

 

On the starter I've used the main mounting bolt as the engine ground connection.

I run the battery negative wire directly to a S/G mounting bolt on the older ones and like @ebinmaine go to the starter mounting bolt on the newer ones. Cast iron is a fairly good conductor of electricity, but not as good as copper.

Silver is a better conductor than copper and gold is a much better conductor than aluminum but then we have to consider cost,        so copper it is.

Copper.... I used to work for a Company that made Manual and Automated Resistance Welders. I dealt with the assembly end - often had to fabricate Buss Bars made of half-hard copper then apply the silver paste coating. Cutting, bending, and machining the copper flat bars was bad enough - try tapping it. Not easy. The drilled holes often were bell mouthed as the copper "grows" from the heat generated from drilling. We had to use plenty of a fast-evaporating tapping fluid to keep the material cool; other wise the heat makes the copper grab the tap, it either taps oversize or snaps the tap... This shop was in Massachusetts; I learned how to "Cuss like a Kennedy"!!

So when are you dipping your 953's in gold?
