Belt on stock 98 Wheel Horse 312-8

Recommended Posts

Hi all!  I've recently changed out the drive belt on my 312-8.  I removed the old belt (which really seemed to be slipping).  I measured it to be 1/2" x 80.5".  I went to my local Tractor Supply and found an 81" belt.  I brought it home and installed it.  The belt still seems to be slipping.  It kinda seems like the clutch idler pulley isn't being pulled back enough, like maybe the belt should be a bit longer, so that the geometry of the pulley arm may add more pressure to the pulley.

So, I'm wondering.....what is the stock belt length on these machines?

Single cylinder transmission drive belt 93-9808 - HB x 82" or 5/8" x 82"

You still have the gas cylinder that dampens the idler? It may not be acting as designed.

Good catch on the gas cylinder, @gwest_ca!

Youre saying that a 5/8" belt is required?  That would definitely apply "more grab."  I bought the tractor with a 1/2" belt.

As for the gas cylinder....it has been removed and placed into the garbage bin because it was definitely not working at all.  Push it in and it just sits there.  Pull it out and it just sits there.

You need to add the proper return spring to tension the belt instead of the problem prone gas spring. I can't recall the P/N, perhaps another Member can...

Found it! 108035

If that 1/2" belt is clean and you have the sleeve, take it back to TSC for a refund and buy a green Aramid  5/8 X 82 belt.
