265-H K61 Axle Seal Replacement Question

Recommended Posts

Ron L

Hi All,

I have a 265-H with a K61 transmission that I picked up to either fix and resell or keep myself. Both axle seals need to be replaced. I know I didn't need to pull the cover and axles out to do this, but it was easier to do that than take the axle hubs off - they're really stuck on. Plus, I was planning on changing the filter.

So the seals did not come out easily and I would not have been able to do this without taking the axles out anyway. Its almost like the seals were glued in and included a metal shim. The replacement seals don't fit with that L-shaped piece of metal glued in (in cross section). Was this OEM or did someone replace these already? The diagram doesn't show any metal shims. Please take a look at the pictures I attached and let me know what you think. You can see where I've been picking away at the rubber rubber portion of the old seals that are behind these shims. I still have a ways to go and I don't know how I'm going to get those metal pieces out. If they're supposed to be there, though, I don't know how the factory seals will fit. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Red Square

Are you sure the metal ring is not part of the seal?

If the metal ring was out of there would the new seal fit?

Thank you. It really seems like the metal ring was part of the seals that were installed. The new seals don't have the ring and would fit it I could get the rings out.

I'm thinking those rings should just pop out of there.  :confusion-confused:

The metal rings are glued in. So frustrating! Definitely a different type of seal. Metal ring and rubber combo, not like the new ones! So much for an easy job...

Maybe a Dremel tool with a cut-off wheel.  :occasion-xmas:

I would really try to avoid damaging the housing. If someone used some sort of adhesive, I would see what might soften that. Possibly thinner or acetone if it was an epoxy. :confusion-questionmarks:

Update here. Transmission is back together. I attached a picture of the seals that I finally pulled out! I was able to punch them in toward the center and pry them out without damaging the housing. They were a mix of a metal ring with the rubber seal that seals around the axle. The "glue" around the metal ring is too uniform to be an aftermarket part so I'm assuming these are from the factory. The new seals fit well...hope they work!
