Install stud bolt on C-100 PTO

Recommended Posts

Farmer Forbes

To all of you mechanically inclined folks out there, I need your assistance.

I own a 1975 C-100 Wheel Horse and am updating some of the parts on the tractor.

I happened to notice the stud bolt (Part # 104842) was broken inside the PTO, so after much anguish I was able to remove the remainder of the bolt (It had lock-tite on the threads).

I found a replacement part and need to know the following:

1.  How far should the stud bolt be screwed into the shaft?

2.  What is the orientation of the 2 x washers and 1 x thrust bearing?

3.  Which direction does the thrust bearing face, towards or away from the engine?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated since I was not able to locate any information about this online.

Thanks

Have never pit one back together.

Instead replaced the outer pto shaft to a new one that has a snap ring on both sides of the outer ball bearing. That way the pto linkage pulls the bell out instead of using the original parts you have.

The stub shaft uses the same 102872 part number that now has two snap ring grooves.

All the internal parts you are dealing with can be omitted.

The shaft and two retaining rings required.

Here is an original illustrated parts list in case you do not have it.

I did that same modification than gwest did on my 76 Reborn B-80. I had the same issue you have, broken stud. Works better and I will make the change if I ever have mess with another one.

@gwest_ca   love the pto  breakdown diagram , very typical  set up over the years  . starting  with # 11 , clutch rod , mounting set up and detailing function as you go , amazing how easily , solidly  it can function , my first  sloppy  connection transition, led me to eliminate , every wobbly , hand off , that led me to  related bearing failures . been years now on my 3 horses , solid smooth  and no screaming / squealing  pto engagement  . the other very interesting thing  , is that your initial , view of it , is not seen ?  paint it red / black , it disappears , that heim joint replacement , from the sloppy trunnion , has led me  to go to that  very often . killer on a plow set up . realise its not original , but repetitive  problem is ?  guy I sold a tractor too , thought  clutch ,and pto were broken?  clutch pedal had no, squealing / binding to it , pto lever was smooth / and silent  . improve as you go , pete

Just #33 and 2 of #34.

If you have access to a lathe you could cut a second groove in #33. The ball bearing goes between the two grooves.

Should replace a retaining ring once it is used. They lose their shape and tension.

When retaining rings are made they are stamped. One side has rounded edges and the other has sharp edges. The sharp edges have more holding power. The outer ring should have the sharp edge out and the inner ring have the sharp edge in towards the engine. The outer ring pushes the bearing in and the inner ring pulls the bearing away from the engine.

It would be a good time to replace the bearing if you can and save the old one for a spare.

If you need the out side PTO bearing it is  P204RR6  or  Z9504RST  0.75" ID,  1.7805" OD. and 0,610 " width.  This bearing is also used in JD mower spindles so it's easy to find.
