CCW 1,442 #1 Posted October 17 Thought I would offer my experience in eliminating aircraft noise when flying. There are three solutions I have used and each has a degree of success. They are in order of helpfulness. Apple Airpods 2 with active noise cancelling, regular 3M or Stihl hearing protectors and Sony noise canceling headphones. The Airpods 2 were without a doubt the most effective and I now use them whenever I run the tractor. They work so well that I now hear little engine noises that are otherwise drowned out by the muffler. The 3M and Stihl hearing protectors did a remarkably good job and the price is much more affordable than the Airpods or Sony headphones. The Sony noise canceling headphones that I have came in a distant third. Regarding the 3M and Stihl protectors I took some old, cheap computer headphones, removed the speakers and installed them in the hearing protectors allowing me to plug into the aircraft's entertainment system. One other caveat. If the aircraft's entertainment system does not allow a blue tooth connection then the Airpods loose some of their functionality. Are there other solutions people have used? kpinnc 15,801 #2 Posted October 17 (edited) Not sure if fixed wing aircraft are as loud as helicopters or not, but we always used foam ear plugs under our coms, whether headset or helmet. In an aircraft, should your noise canceling ear buds drop out, you could get a very uncomfortable jolt of noise. There are plenty of times that such a thing could be very dangerous. Just my opinion.
