Looks like the tachometer and gas gauge don’t work. Voltmeter and vacuum gauge do work.

If the 520-H has a weak spot (you know, after 35 years ), it would be the electrical system. They had more guages and wiring than any other model.

If the engine and transmission are good, you've got a solid and powerful machine!

If all of the gauges burned out you would be left with an ordinary Wheel Horse.

The 520 wiring problems are well known. There are many posts here on the overheating of the molex connectors.

The overheating of the rear cylinder that causes the exhaust valve seat to loosen is also a concern in the Onans.

The missing seal around the oil filter contributes to the overheating problem.

I have also found failure of the gasket between the oil filter base plate and the block that causes a very small oil leak.

The small amount of oil is blown across the rear cooling fins causing the grass to collect and clog the fins.

Looks decent to me. Not the prettiest but runs nice.

What’s the correct oil filter for this? The number on parts tree crossed to a Wix 51374 but I pulled a 51762 off of it.

This is what I have in my notes for the engine:

  • Oil filter
    • Onan 122-0800
    • NAPA Gold 1762 (1764 had the wrench end)
    • Fleetguard LF3339
    • Wix 51762  (4.5”)

For the transmission:

  • Wix 51410 or Napa 1410 because it does not have a by-pass valve
  • Excellent 3

I put a 51410 on the transmission, from what I’ve read I believe either will work but I think the 51762 is just the longer version of the 51374.

You're gonna want the longer filter. Besides making it easier to remove later, it works better with the big gasket that you absolutely should use for proper airflow on that rear cylinder.

Cut some grass with it today, surged quite a bit. I know it sat prior to my getting it, so I’m guessing dirty carb? Maybe a vacuum leak?
