Oh deer me

We have our camper at a semi-local campground for the rest of the season in rural upstate NY near the intersection of CT, MA and NY.  Last night when traveling up, a deer decided to test their luck and jumped out while I was doing about 50mph.  Sadly the deer didn’t not make it, 2 local men helped me pull the bumper out of the right tire, which didn’t go flat, then one of them took the deer. Have to see what the damage is when the sun comes out, but I think that it is drivable. Damage is worse than the pictures show, the bumper was pushed into the right front tire, looks like the AC Condenser may have taken a hit, fog light, proximity sensors on and on.

  Surprised the deer was taken (assuming for meat) I would think that deer was pretty bruised up.

Glad  you were OK.   It's that time of the year.   The peak of the rutting activity will be in 3-4 weeks here in Pa.   The standing corn that is planted a few feet from the road edges allows no reaction time when the deer are rutting.

I seldom use mine. Most of the time they are turned off but kinda useful on these big busses when in tight parking lots. 

Least no one was hurt.

No way ... I have had grilled venison a lot worse than that and insurance paid to fix it.  Wife's Prius was 14K and they fixed it. 

I'm gonna say Coaches' is 4275. Not bad for a newer 70k + truck. Body shops here live on deer damage.

A fellow mechanical engineering student in college did a technical paper on deer vs. auto collisions that I got to read. Sobering how effective a wrecker (and even killer) these can be. I’d say you’re lucky to escape injury.

My guess is $6k, it’s a 2018 3500 Limited Mega Cab, HO Cummins with 53k on the clock, no way the insurance company is going to total this truck. Condenser is bent, but not leaking, intercooler was not touched.

That was supposed to be a joke about the price of parts and this new 1234-yf refrigerant.

 

However it has become a common practice for insurance to "total" a vehicle, then later repair and resell it at auction over part back orders and the cost of rentals while waiting for parts.

Now that I have not heard of but don't doubt. Would think like our tractors worth more in parts. 

The worse part about it Coach is you ever take in for trade they will heckle you about a carfax report and of course offer less. Even if it was fixed better than new.

In fifty years I have hit three deer.   Usually about 50 to 55 MPH like Nylon..  Each time front bumper.  

 

Each time about $1500 to $2500 to replace/repair.

 

I was always pleased they did not get bounce up on the hood and go through the windshield as I know it use to be a terrible death scene in Michigan and Wisconsin in the old days when those razor sharp

hooves of the deer failed though the windshield.

 

I always consider myself lucky when I bust up the front end when hitting a deer -as compared to the alternative.

This is my first deer hit, but I couldn’t agree more with your statement.  I had my wife and 2 of my dogs with me in the truck, my daughter, son and the 3rd dog in the car directly behind me.

This truck will be one which is handed down, in my opinion 2018 was the last year of the reliable Cummins engines. And, it was $88k 🙂

Hit a deer many years ago in nowhere Nebraska driving my almost new 1978 Pontiac Sunbird. It was jumping caught the grill and bounced of the windshield.   Broke it but didn't come through. Hood stayed down as i had put locking pins on it as previous car somebody stolen my battery.   Had to drive about 35 miles to a small town spend the night while  a new windshield was brought in.

I just took it for a test ride, no noises, building full boost and the AC is working. Front proximity is giving a fault, which makes complete sense since one was damaged. Drive straight, no vibrations so I think it’s road worthy. We’re about 65 miles from home and I think it will be fine until it can hit the body shop.

Front proximity sensors.   I remember when we drove 65 Fleetwood Brougham's , Buick  Duce and a Quarter's and Lincoln Continentals and had to parallel park them for our road test!

What's worse is if one tries to swerve and ends up rolling in the ditch or the other lane and heaven forbid hit soccer mom with a boat load of kids. 

After one deer strike the insurance company sent me a brochure on best advice on what to do if it happens. At the top was of course seat belts and do not swerve but hit the binders and just hit it. Very informational I shouldn't have tossed it.

My '17 has the 6.7 strait six and I woulda never bought the truck with anything less. Lots of untapped camper pulling ponies in any late Cummings.

I heard about a trucker that happened to on I-80 near Snow Shoe.

 

Except it wasn't a deer, it was a bear. And the bear didn't die right away.

‘19 and up have hydraulic roller tappets and CP4. CP4 is so bad they were all recalled and replaced with a CP3. The roller tappets are a big failure point. Aside from the potential grid heater bolt, the pre-2019’s are solid.  Mine has the Aisin trans which some say is better than an Allison.

My first car was a 1971 Chrysler 300 with a 440+6, dad made me take my drivers test in a ‘74 Mark IV two big boats. And I failed parallel parking

In 1959 I drove the 50 mile to the nearest driver test police station in the vehicle I had been driving for 5 years.    It was a '36 Dodge Pick up that resembled this one.

 

The Pa State policeman opened the passengers door, looked in and started writing on his clip board.    He handed me the report that said I needed to fix the holes in the floorboards, replace two bald tires. replace the seat that had springs exposed, and have it inspected before I came back.  luckily he did let me drive it home where we made it a "Farm Truck".
