4988 S/G switch ?

Referring to the starter/generator key switches. I have a couple of these that have a weak return spring and was wondering if anyone has successfully rebuilt/repaired them? They work fine other than the weak return spring and I have forgot to manual return key to the run position, not for very long periods, but would think that it couldn't be to healthy for them.

I have tried, and gave up.

The switch’s body is a casting of weak metal and the flanges, which secure the guts, broke off when I tried to move them.

If the switch were rare or irreplaceable, I’d have worked to find some way hold a repaired switch back together.

@ri702bill has experience with castings like this and might add some thoughts!

Must be talking about that 1257 I sold you Squirrel ... I just got used to it and never did figure out if it did damage to anything if you forgot to turn it back. I don't think it did as caught my self a few times forgetting to do it on the plow field.

I thought they were roll crimped on and would imagine a bugger to get apart and worse to put back together.

Yes as long as they are available yet could always try it. Can't really wreck it. I have taken a few others apart for $h1ts & grins but then round filed it and got a new one. Inquiring minds want to know ... :)

Hello friend and yes that's one of them lol. I have a new switch just hadn't got around to replacing. :scared-shocked: It surely doesn't do much because the 1257 is the one I just can't remember to turn back to run position. You must have already had it trained for said circumstances'  :ychain:

Achto

I have a couple that the return spring is bad on. I have just gotten in the habit of if I feel a Cole Hersee key in my fingers, I return the switch to the run position. I should just start replacing them but like @WHX?? always says "Got a lot of mouths to feed here" :D
