LarryD87301 14 #1 Posted September 25 (edited) I recently purchased a C175. The previous owner said it had a recent overhaul and fuel pump replacement. I used it a couple of times with the installed front bucket loader and rear mounted blade with no problems. I removed the bucket and blade and installed the 42-inch rear discharge deck mower. Now after a period of time operating the tractor it cuts out and stops running. Possibly after 45 minutes to an hour of running. I didn't run the tractor that long while the loader was installed. I first thought it was a fuel issue but after a little research I see the tractor has a temp. sensor that shuts off when the oil reaches a certain temp. The engine starts after sitting 15-20 minutes. I did a search and found a thread that mentioned cleaning the fins on the engine cylinders and around the transmission. I blew them out with compressed air, but they weren't dirty. I looked all around the engine and don't see the sensor. Any Ideas? I have a 1981 C175 Twin Automatic a 42 MR02 rear discharge deck mower the Kohler K17 sn 10034679. so, the sn indicates it is a series II engine, but my research said one way to tell a series I from a series II is an oil filter. Gasaholic 334 #2 Posted September 25 Series II can come with no oil filter (My 417-8 doesnt have one either) From the sounds of it I'd be suspecting the ignition coil.. carry a spark tester or spare spark plug with you and pre-test to be sure you can see the spark when engine's cold (It may start while testing unless you unhook both plugs) and then when it shuts down , test for spark and if you have no spark, your coil is likely breaking down when hot - It isn't uncommon - new coils are readily available on Amazon (I got an aftermarket one, works just fine though the supplied wires needed a little "tweaking" to shift the boots far enough that wires will seat fully in coil) also be sure the bracket (and condenser mounted to it typically) have a good solid ground (not rusty/corroded) - if getting a new coil, I'd opt to put in new points and condenser too, but that's just me... (and be sure you get OEM Genuine Kohler points, even though they're considerably more expensive - that aftermarket crap just don't work right when it comes to points & condenser for them) 3 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
ri702bill 10,032 #3 Posted September 25 Larry - welcome! Use an inline xenon bulb spark checker. Install it when the engine is cold, run it and watch the bulb. It should rapidly flash each time the coil fires the plug. That is for single cylinder engines, a two banger you would need to pick one. Run it until it dies - then watch the checker as you crank it. No spark, it's the coil. Got spark? The problem is most likely fuel related - but - it could be an oil fouled spark plug. My FIL's tired 702 will plow snow for over an hour or more - shut it off to refuel, it will not restart yet it has spark. oliver2-44 10,976 #4 Posted September 25 I'm not a Kohler Twin guru. But to my knowledge Kohler supplies an" Oil Sentry", not an oil temperature switch. This is an oil pressure switch, It is located down around the oil pan possible near where the optional oil filter adapter would mount and has 2 wires coming out of it. 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I first thought it was a fuel issue The engine starts after sitting 15-20 minutes The fuel tank cap has a vent to prevent a vacuum from forming in the fuel tank as gas is used. Once a vacuum builds up in the tank the fuel pump can not overcome it and the engine starves for fuel.
