Did not find the face plate and the spindle looks smaller than from a modern conventional lathe.

 

I'm in the process of making a pattern to sand cast a couple from aluminum. Will post as this project progress's along.

 

Any ideas for a drive spur to enable the turning of spindles, are welcome.

The typical spur uses a taper.  Morse tapers are common in the US.  Probably Canada, too.  

 

That spindles looks like it might have enough beef to drill and ream for a taper.

 

I suppose one could weld the business end of a tapered spur to a plate that would bolt to  a faceplate.
