Since I got some new Cadillacs I don't need to wear glasses anymore. Now in the shop everyone should wear safety glasses. 

Well yesterday while wire wheeling the gasket surfaces on tranny halves  a bristle came off and headed strait for my face. Missed the eye by an inch and wasn't wearing any protection.  No pics or this would have been in bumps and bruises. 

 

What's worse is @Achto gave me a real nice set he gets from work. He works in a very industrial environment. Says they got safety machines there that dispense them and gloves and such. He is allowed one a week and just has to swipe his ID to get them. 

 

Best part is they have cheaters built right in in different strengths.

 

So SWMBO marches me right out to the truck where she left them and makes me wear them. She says just because protection is no longer needed on the night stand ...  and something about Red Ryder and yer gonna poke an eye out. 

 

Now I imagine you can get them cheap in the jungle but I like Dan's price ... clean the machine out Dan I'll have them laying every  where!!!

I wear glasses, so I need to get the over glasses goggle type. I get three packs at Harbor Freight...

 

Prescription Glasses alone don't cut it...

Unless you get prescription safety glasses. 

 

Even with safety glasses on, a person should use a face shield when using a grinder or wire wheel.

Me neither, but I my glasses have saved my eyes from severe damage so many times if I take them off, I get the same uncomfortable feeling I get if I'm driving without a seat belt.        Just a few of mine were pieces from a wire wheel that pierced my ear, limbs hitting my face when walking in the woods in the dark, and the one that would have burned out both eyes when one of these exploded, melting my glasses and knocking me unconscious.

Several years ago, I had to have retina surgery. Not specifically looking for it, the doctor found a piece of metal in my eye that I never knew was there.

I've had prescription Z rated prescription safety glasses for about 10 years.  Even the new glasses I've gotten since i retired.  

 

They really need side shields to be installed to be minimally effective.  I'll agree with @Achto - a face shield is needed for effective protection when using high speed rotary equipment - wire wheels (all sizes), grinders, die grinders, Dremel type tools, etc.

Funny you mention that... Using a wire wheel on sheet metal parts has been known to "alter" the fingerprint on my thumb...

I got these cut proof gloves from a friend that works in the utility.

I wear them with using the wheel saved me a couple times.as you can see form the skid marks. Like $9 a pair but real tough stuff.

 on @ineedanother post - one of the other engineers in the plant needed a spacer to fix a ser up or downtime issue in the plant.  A washer was just a little too thick, so he took it to a belt sander to buzz a little off.  The belt grabbed the washer, flung the washer from under his fingers, then proceeded to erase fingerprints and create a recordable incident in the plant's safety record.

We used those vending machines also at work for safety stuff and small hand tools. 

Different classifications had more or less a budget for the month. Maintenance Persons had the most money because of the small hand tools. Screw drivers, channel locks, tape measures, and high use items etc. 

Saved a ton of cost because we knew who got what and when.

One big deal was the machines we available 24/7 so there never was a problem with having safety items and the machines were hooked into the internet and a vendor would restock when low.

We had a couple of those "vending machines" from Fastenal when I worked in the school districts. We would get yelled at if we took too many Sharpies, safety glasses, ear plugs and drill bits!

I'm gonna disagree.

 

The most important piece of PPE is the brain. Especially in my line of work. We lift 2500-4000 lb vehicles over our heads and walk around under them every day. I don't care how good your safety glasses, helmet, or steel-toe boots are, if that car falls off the lift on you because you weren't paying attention they aren't going to save you.

I had a grinder get me once and I was wearing safety glasses. Coupled with that, I had flash burned my eyes using a new welding hood that was set up wrong. And of course it happened on a Friday night...

 

My doctor had to drill out the rust rings in the white of my eye, after pulling the fragments with tweezers. The pain until they were removed was horrible. Even with numbing drops, it was very uncomfortable. 

 

If I hadn't been wearing goggles it would have been much worse. The fragments came in from the bottom and actually bounced off the lenses on the inside. Probably would have blinded me if it was a direct hit.

I had 3 serious incidents involving my eyes.

 

1. Flycutting a flange on a Bridgeport when a brand new Starrett parallel clamp broke in half and the piece was hit by the flycutter and it sent it into my safety glasses destroying them completely.  I cleaned the debris from my eye and there was no injury.   It was nearly impossible to believe that I lucked out after seeing the glasses.

 

2. I was filing a workpiece in a vise when I just blew the filings away by mouth and one of the slivers found its way behind my glasses and into my eye and it had to be forcibly removed by an eye surgeon. 

 

3. I was working on a tool block that contained 5 parting tools for a lathe.  I was in a separate room well away from any machines and made the mistake of laying the safety glasses aside.  That tool block had a failed parting tool that was jammed so tightly that when I just touched the clamp screw with an Allen wrench it shot out like a bullet straight in my eye.  The result was a one week hospital stay with both eyes covered.

 

Just stupid simple things that seemed like there should be no problem.  Be careful out there, you only get two eyes.
