Another guy who has said he's retiring for the past 10 years just fell thru the floor of his brother's trailer. I planning on retiring (again) at the end of next May. That is unless some nurse manager tries to throw her (weight) around again then it could be any day now! 2

953 nut 61,700 #8 Posted August 29 I have had several changes of vocation over the years but the best choice I ever made was retirement. Nineteen years and counting. 8
JPWH 6,537 #9 Posted August 29 I gave the company notice seven years ago, Three years ago they decided I needed to train my replacement. I gave them a hard date when I finished my chemo. My replacement has done very well without too many questions. I have been looking forward to this day for a long time. 5

It's great they hired someone to get trained before you left. Our lead was one of the guys who retired. They had 10 months to hire someone. The lead and I could have had him fully trained by now. They haven't even listed the job yet.

Beap52 1,573 #12 Posted August 29 WARNING: Retirement means that others see retirees as those who have plenty of free time to assist them in their needs. Practice saying "N0." in a mirror until it flows off of the tongue like butter! Congratulations to a well deserved retirement. 4

WHX?? 52,677 #15 Posted August 30 Congrats Hank ... I thought I knew what you did for a living ... Electrical?? It does take a little getting used to. Not having to get out the door in the morning, drinking coffee out of a cup than a travel mug. I do miss the fringees tho. I actually had to buy some black iron exhaust fittings the other day rather than reaching in the bin at the shop. 18 minutes ago, nylyon said: never been so busy doing things. LOL Congrats to you as well Karl.

JPWH 6,537 #21 Posted August 30 We had another guy retired back then and only gave six months notice. They were complaining about finding his replacement in such a short time. So at the next meeting I had with the board of directors I let them know they might want to start looking for my replacement. They started looking three years ago and I started training my replacement about a year before I got cancer. I'm happy to report he is doing a good job. 4

Safety training and enforcement, writing Job specific Safety and HAZ COM manuals, quality control, gear change out plans and procedures, lifting plans, confined space plans, procedures, and training, designing temporary power and lighting for all our projects, and pre-qualification forms for contractors.
rmaynard 16,490 #23 Posted August 30 Congrats Jay. I officially retired 13 years ago, but kept on working here and there until my back gave out. But like Karl said: "I stopped working at the end of January and have never been so busy doing things."
JPWH 6,537 #24 Posted August 30 I have been busy doing nothing most of the time over the last year. I'm excited to get back in my shop. I have a lot of sorting and labeling and some other tasks that I can do and still follow Dr orders. By the time I finish these I should be able to get back on projects and do a little traveling as well when the Dr appt. schedule eases up.
