ebinmaine 73,015 #1 Posted Wednesday at 11:31 AM Another fabulous trip up north! We stayed here in the area of the red circle for 3 nights. Just drive in. Find a place to set for a bit. The moderate drought here had the roads a basic dust bowl. Here's a few views from low altitude of Big Spencer Mt. This, believe it or not, shows a beautifully constructed rock staircase. It was done maybe 12 to 15 years ago by a group of college age volunteers to prevent erosion and keep good access to the mountain. This is Mt Katahdin from Spencer. This is not just any old mound of dirt. It's the largest 🐜 🐜 🐜 ant nest we've ever seen. About the size of an average sedan. Whilst perusing and exploring the forest we found a mud puddle with several excellent animal tracks. Here's a nice bear 🐻 track. There was also moose deer and others... This is what a bear 🐻 does in the woods... One of our 3 piles of firewood. We noticed it looked like a beaver house and Trina decided it needed a birch flag. We have another 3 nights of camping this week! More pics soon. 7 6

davem1111 2,172 #3 Posted yesterday at 01:55 AM That's awesome, Eric! Camping and hiking is great. Hah - I saw a T-Shirt at a visitor center in KY when I was camping there that said "HIKE! Because people suck!" I don't think I posted anything about that trip, back in June. I'll have to post some pictures and info.

Had a big black bear follow me for more than a half mile one night. I tell myself he was just curious. Myself calls BS on that sentiment... Otherwise fantastic pictures! Minus the scat of course! I used to love to go camping. Still do, but never again without a large caliber repeating camp untensil and plenty of high capacity beans to feed it. In all seriousness- Looks like it was a great time! Edited yesterday at 06:27 AM by kpinnc 1

The black bears 🐻 we have are still extremely docile herbivores for the most part. When they see or sense a human they run away. We've encountered several. Momma with cubs now... that's different. Same for a moose momma. 🫎 The real concerns here are bull moose 🫎 in the rut and humans. That said, We're cautious and aware of our surroundings and 4 hours ago, kpinnc said: repeating camp untensil This is always on hand.

The bears here don't have to forage as hard for winter, and like you said they typically avoid people. Seeing one is actually rare for the most part. But the one that followed me almost 40 years ago? I still occasionally have nightmares over that rascal. He followed me to where my car was parked, and when I turned the headlights on him, he just stood up and stared at me. He was in the edge of a cornfield, and the corn was around 4 feet tall. He was well over two feet above it. I have always believed he was sick or something. He just didn't act right. Who knows, he probably (correctly) thought the same of me. Bull moose? No sir, you can keep those crazy things! I've been told they will charge a moving train.
