M12….stumped!!

Recommended Posts

AHS

Brand new to me! I just replaced the fuel pump (and its pumping fuel, cleaned the carb), started for 10 minutes then i shut it off…..wait two weeks…. It wont start again, and its pumping fuel from the pump and. It’s filling up the carb bowl, but not getting to the spark plug. I cleaned the carb again, and it’s spotless! What should i do? Replace the head gasket? Replace the carb? BTW.. The story ive heard of the tractor was a very easy life, it was bangor savings banks long ago: it mowed. Their grass and snowblowed their  sidewalks… even though it got 0000 on the meter, i have a feeling it’s got less than 300 hours. Then the tractor sat in a field for the rest of the years… and faded!!

Is the choke closing all the way?

Sat in a field. Mice get in the shroud and chew on the coil wire reducing spark?

Will it fire if you shoot a little brake clean in the carb?

If it fires with a squirt, it's fuel related.

If not, it's spark/ignition related

Ok, it fires with fuel. So, carb?

Cleaned the carb good w/ carb cleaner. Took out the jets and sprayed thru the passage. I hate to buy a carb off ebay, (isavetractors tractors is all out of them!)

I haven’t tried thru the carb, but in the head it will. I’ll check that this morning.

If it’s running with the brake clean, then you have a fuel issue.  Since you said that the fuel pump is pumping to the carb AND that the bowl is filling, then I would assume there is a blockage inside of the carb.  When you cleaned it, did you run small wire through the passage ways and blow out with compressed air?

@AHS    regularly  refer to running in an unknown engine engine , on a seperate callon of heavily treated fresh gas , that eliminates the possible  fuel hose break down , also add a fuel check valve , just under carb area , so you can see standing fuel held to carb , with clear line , done a number of  fuel related issues , usually  debris  loaded tank , ethanol  destroying any and all  rubber hose , if you don't remove  / change the fuel hose , the problem remains . my own experience with fuel issues ,is to eliminate all old hose / replace with new ,clean tank  add a couple ounces of  STA BIL to a full tank , and stop the hose break down , also have a filter close to tank ,and another close to carb , so you can see what's going on . have this change over , set up  on all my small engines , same result , instant starts , and no debris in filters . at each tank top off , add an ounce or 2 of stabil , make a complete change  to existing set up , pete

Did you soak the High Speed Needle and make sure its passages are clean? It is actually a tube with holes at the top, middle, and bottom which determines the amount of fuel by comparing the atmospheric pressure to the pressure in the venturi. If it ain't right the fuel flow won't be either.

@ebinmaine did a great job of documenting a proper carburetor rebuild.

While I doubt that valve adjustment is the problem, it is a good idea to know that the valve clearance is correct so you don't burn a valve or have excessive wear.

Good choice. There are many good ones out there. For my serious machines I've been using Mr. Gasket 42s pumps. The other have the cheapies but danged if they've haven't been working fine. They just go thump, thump, thump. The better ones have a nice whirr. Can't hear either with the engine running. :)

I have very little trust in his products.

IMHO you're just as well off with a "jungle"  piece.

The Facet brand from Aircraft spruce is the best bet and best price.
