Sodaking27 1,049 #1 Posted August 12 Finally decided to look into what was causing the front plug to foul with carbon. Removed the cylinder heads. Compression in both cylinders was 110 before the tear apart. Going to clean it up, check the valve clearance and put it back together. It didn’t have any visible smoke when running. I think the series 1 is nearing it’s end . Time to start looking for a replacement.
ebinmaine 74,541 #2 Posted August 12 Rings ? I'd rebuild a Kohler single without hesitation but that Series 1 twin..... maybe not.
8ntruck 8,152 #3 Posted August 12 @ebinmaine a KT series 1 is not a good match for your use on your not so flat property - a KT series 2 would be better. For someone with a nice level piece of property, a properly maintained KT series 1 can have a long life - the one in my C-195 shows over 1200 hours. It apparently spent most of its life in the thumb area of Michigan, which is what you would consider to be flatland. The cost of rebuilding a KT is high, and parts are not that common. I considering a rebuild on my KT19, but I am realizing that for a similar cost, I can swap in a more modern engine with a bit more power that will also be a bit better on fuel - not to mention also being not as sensitive to being operated in attitudes farther from level.
