I recently bought a 1973 c-160 automatic and the axle seal was bad so I found one online and ordered and when I went to put it in it didn’t fit almost like OD was just to big it was a #6449 but I was reading and I also found a #5958 so my question here is which one do I need

Do you have a 1973 16hp Automatic or a 1974 or later C-160 Automatic?

Required to look up the correct parts. Have the long model number and serial number?

6449 is a good number on hydrostatic transaxle oil seals. I have gotten them on :techie-ebay: and been very pleased with the fit and performance. https://www.ebay.com/itm/142042768245

I've used those seals for years without a problem.  I wonder if @Gagetmag got defective seals or if he damaged them when installing.  I use the axle hub as a slide hammer to press them in.
