On National Fortune Cookie Day, celebrated on July 20, we picture you enjoying a crunchy, sweet delicacy! Every year, Americans commemorate the cookie that is a staple of Chinese take-out. These crisp, folded biscuits have a buttery flavor to them. When you open them, you’ll discover a piece of paper with a message nestled inside. The phrase will range from profound wisdom to hard puzzles to basic common sense. Some fortunes incorporate quotations from well-known thinkers. Every year, about three billion fortune cookies are created and consumed by ecstatic admirers. It’s time for everyone to enjoy this great occasion, National Fortune Cookie Day!

:soapbox:

It seems that “Political Correctness” has overtaken the fortune cookie industry. Fortune cookies don't contain actual "fortunes" anymore , they have been replaced with generic “uplifting messages.” While they used to feature more traditional, sometimes predictive, fortunes, they now often contain sayings, lucky numbers, or general statements,   :???:      yuck.

According to the cookie makers this shift is due to a combination of factors, including a desire to avoid potentially offensive or controversial messages, a focus on positive, edifying, relatable content,

I for one miss the predictions of great wealth and conquest.          :handgestures-thumbupright:

It seems like I heard or read that fortune cookies originated in Japan.  Why we don't get them at sushi bars instead of the (many) local Chinese restaurants, I'll never know.

I do like to eat them and the wife, not so much--a twofer for me!

I’d settle for timeless profundities like “Man who goes to bed with itchy rear, wake up with smelly finger.”
