Every year, Americans commemorate the cookie that is a staple of Chinese take-out. These crisp, folded biscuits have a buttery flavor to them. When you open them, you’ll discover a piece of paper with a message nestled inside. The phrase will range from profound wisdom to hard puzzles to basic common sense. Some fortunes incorporate quotations from well-known thinkers. Every year, about three billion fortune cookies are created and consumed by ecstatic admirers. 953 nut 59,767 #3 Posted 12 hours ago It seems that “Political Correctness” has overtaken the fortune cookie industry. Fortune cookies don't contain actual "fortunes" anymore , they have been replaced with generic “uplifting messages.” While they used to feature more traditional, sometimes predictive, fortunes, they now often contain sayings, lucky numbers, or general statements, yuck. According to the cookie makers this shift is due to a combination of factors, including a desire to avoid potentially offensive or controversial messages, a focus on positive, edifying, relatable content, I for one miss the predictions of great wealth and conquest. 5
Beap52 1,393 #4 Posted 3 hours ago It seems like I heard or read that fortune cookies originated in Japan. Why we don't get them at sushi bars instead of the (many) local Chinese restaurants, I'll never know. I do like to eat them and the wife, not so much--a twofer for me!
