PTO CLUTCH & CONTROL

My 1980 model C1100 Special is having a PTO problem. The drive belt is OK, the transmission and idler pulley are all OK. The problem seems to be the play in the Pulley Housing. After 45 years of working 3 acres, it is to be expected. I am wondering which of the following parts is MORE suspect and prone to wear and tear than the others. Here are the parts that I suspect: Ball Bearing part 106947, Needle Bearing part number 106769 (6662 or Torrington J-2420), Seal 6663, Bearing Race 6935, Clutch Plate & Facing part number 103817. Any ONE or MORE of these parts may have a COMBINED wear that might cause my issue. When I first engaged the PTO the tractor ran fine, all gears, then after a stop no engagement but a noise like several bee bees in an empty freight car. I went to check the 0.012 spacing for adjustment but there was what I think, too much play to make the proper adjustment. I can take hold of the Pulley Housing and pull it back and forth about a 1/4 inch!!! My expertise is Electrical not mechanical but I know enough to observe, make adjustments and READ manuals especially when I am "out of my elements".  Can the experts on the forum who know a BOATLOAD more than I about this problem give me your expert advice? If the PTO bell is moving 1/4"  front to rear or up and down, the needle bearing has  to be gone or severely damaged.  Adjacent parts are also probably damaged.

Pull the bell off and take some pictures.

Thank you Ed for your quick response. I intend to take photos tomorrow morning and post them. The movement of the Pulley Housing is in and out as I remember from this morning, but I will recheck this in AM when I disassemble the PTO and take photos.

The most common thing I see is the outer bearing failing. It's a common # 204RR6

This is  good.   As Mike said, likely the thrust bearing and or retaining clip.

Hello neighbor, I didn't know (or forgot) anyone else from town was member on here.

Believe you are going to find the problem pretty quickly after removing the PTO bell housing. Most likely that outer bearing like Mike posted

When searching for a suspected bearing failure heat can be your best indication. Don't burn yourself in the process but after running the deck for a short time check all moving parts for heat and you can find the most likely culprit.

If you happen to remove or disturb the transmission drive pulley you need this. Just in case you were not aware of it.

I was unaware of this! I had to remove the drive pulley but not the bearing inside the Engine drive pulley, it looked excellent. I did notice however that when I removed the drive pulley the set screw was backed out, the Hi-Pro key was the only thing holding the pulley to the engine shaft, not good!

I disassembled the PTO this morning and I noticed that the Clutch friction plate surface was in bad shape, only 3/32" thickness remained. I also noticed that the Seal (part number 6663) was missing; lost during disassembly a year ago for engine rebuild and never noticed during reassembly. All the other parts and bearings were in very good conditions, check the photos included in this reply. I will be ordering the missing seal 6663 and the Clutch Plate & Friction part number 103817 today.
