Kohler M12 back firing, choking...

Recommended Posts

Rubberman

Have a 312-8 Wheelhorse with the M12 engine. I replaced the carb with a clone. Added an electric fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator (set at 1 psi). had this setup for a while but now it won't run anything highter than an idle. It starts choking out and backfiring.Even at idle if I try to engage deck it will die. I just cut half the backyard and ran fine then this hit. Any adjustments to the low and high speed needles makes it run worse. Adjustments to fuel pressure regulator make no difference. thoughts ?

Dirt in the carb  need to thoroughly clean it and your fuel lines.  Some clone carbs do not run well...

I left it alone for a bit. Adjust the low speed 2 turns out , hi speed 1.5 turns out and ran fine. No issues at all. I don’t know

Dump the sediment bowl.

Even if moving the needle valves cleared it up, the bowl may still have crud in it.

@Rubberman  regularly refer to running in a  used engine on a separate  gallon of heavily treated fresh fuel , always drop carb bowl , another consistent issue is  rubber hose break down , since going over to  FUEL STA BIL , in all my  stuff , every filter is clean and clear , and fuel bowls  are clean and clear  , also have a couple of   carbole electric pumps . very solid , no issues . realise the fuel issue is very  argumentative , did my own trying / testing , have zero fuel related issues , since  making the change , pete

@kpinnc  always look at a chronic issue , as a perfect  opportunity  to make that  trouble free. look at what it is SAPOSED TO DO  . very often , looking at every stage , and making it  better . changes are so close , you initially  , don,t even see them , but if  they  make it  consistently  reliable , isn't that what you want ?   like a roller stool , for a visual , hands on idea trial . another thing I have added to choke throttle linkage , is very light spring assist , to lubricated linkage , also insure related cabling , is lubricated , and slides with out effort , super lube , hydraulic oil / spray , check out temp range , extreme . always look at a members pictures , and see a related  spot / area , that I  changed out , eliminated a chronic area , that has been working with for issues for years. just the way I look at things , retired 24 / 7 millwright , pete

Have you been using gasoline that has ethanol in it?  If so, STOP. That junk gas will cause problems with your fuel system. To find a station that sells non-E-gas use this website           .  https://www.pure-gas.org/
