Kohler knocking sound found and small oil leak

Recommended Posts

Oily Charger 10

My Kohler Mystery engine has been making a knocking sound at low rpm. It sounds like this: do, do, do, do… do, do… do, do, do, do…

here his a video all about.

I would like some help. So far the camshaft is the thing making sound I think. I will be taking out the grenade gears…

I commented on your YouTube video.

That cam to crank gear set may have some extra Lash but the grenade gears are definitely a place to start.

I've seen several examples online and in person of people replacing the gears only. Reusing the shafts and bearings does not fix the problem.

@Oily Charger 10,    first  :WRS:, look on the ID plate for your engine,  let us know what the SPEC number is, The infamous grenade gears were used in 12, 14 and 16 HP Kohler but not in the early K-241.

Could be the infamous Kohler low RPM knock? I have a Mag 10 on the grand kids machine that knocks, like a sweeper salesman, at low revs. Throttle up a bit and goes away.

Been running fine for over 5 years.

Very strong hydro on B100 automatic. Long story short, I fell off tractor, it ran against wall and keep working for several seconds before I was able shut it off. Now major hydro leak. Feedback on transmission prognosis and repairability please.  Btw, I suffered skinned knee and jammed shoulder. Lol

I have a few few Kohler K Series 4,-12,16HP overhauls coming up.  I feel sure they will need to be bored and maybe crank ground. I have the Kohler service manual and have looked at some overhaul threads on here.  So my question are:
      1. Do you replace the plastic governor gear during a Major Overhaul
      2. Do you replace cam shaft bushings?

I have a leak on the elbow that screws into the front of the lift valve. Does anyone know how that is sealed? I looked at parts tree at it doesn't show an o-ring or seal?  The elbow is Toro part number 108365. Part #1 on the diagram. Thanks for the help.

      Hello all,

I have inherited a 74 B100 with 10hp K241S 46636d when my father passed away. I remembered this tractor new, so when asked, I wanted it.  It runs and mows, however, the engine slows and speeds up randomly.
I left it running and lifted the hood. 1st thing I noticed was a loose plug wire, fiddled with it and she spurred up to max rpm. But that only worked randomly as well.(will replace wire soon). 2nd and possibly most importantly I noticed a MASSIVE amount of air/exhaust coming out of the "FIN" area (see pic) Forgive me but, is this normal? I mean it feels like a high powered fan. Any other thoughts on Idle speed random variations would be much appreciated.
