Axehund 7 #1 Posted July 12 Hello. Grew up with Wheel Horse and have been fixing up a couple from the 90’s this past year. A 312-8 I was given that I used to mow with for a wile and most recently a 520H that my dad bought new back when. The 520 was a bit of a basket case after a repower and being passed around the family a bit but I have it doing much better now. The 312-8 now has a 20hp Honda engine and is going to plow the drive this winter. The 312 (now a 320) got some fresh paint and both received new decals from redoyourhorse which look great. I started to notice the 8 speeds shifter not feeling right and noticed the whole stick wanting to twist. I have not removed it yet but it appears I have a broken roll pin that holds the donut to the stick. I’m sure I could source a pin but I’m wondering it I could take it out, clean and line it up and weld it in place. Is the donut weldable steel? It looks like it probably is but I don’t have it out yet. Anyone weld one? Not sure if it could be cast or even bronze like a bushing. Seems like a few tack welds would be more solid unless that’s a bad idea for a reason unknown to me.

If nothing else I have about half this assortment left!!
oliver2-44 10,781 #3 Posted July 12 (edited) You may just have a loose dog point allen head screw that locks the shifter in place. Lift the rubber boot and on the front side of the collard on the top of the transmission shifter hole you will see this dog point set screw. It has a jam nut on it, so back that off. Get transmission in netural, then remove shifter and inspect ball and its pin, I 'm betting its OK. Notice the ball has a recessed spot on it. Reinstall shifter and line up recessed spot with dog point screw. Adjust dog point so it lightly grabs ball, but shifter moves with just a little friction. Hold the dog point with the allen wrench and snug up the jam nut to lock it in place. Edited July 12 by oliver2-44
Axehund 7 #4 Posted July 13 Thanks. Hopefully I can pull it out tomorrow night. I did lift the boot and can see the shifter rotating in the donut so I figured that pin is trashed although it won’t simply pull up out of the donut. Looks like they can be welded so at least I’ll have that option when I get a better look.
rjg854 12,248 #5 Posted July 13 As you've already seen, this is the answer place! There's no problem you can have that hasn't already been dealt with here. And folks are quite willing to lend their advice and ideas.
wallfish 18,242 #7 Posted July 13 Yes, they can be welded. 2 or 3 of them in the pic EB posted are welded. You could also find a new roll pin at just about any hardware store or online

953 nut 60,348 #9 Posted July 13 Probably a good idea to replace that dog-point while you bare at it.
Axehund 7 #10 Posted July 13 Well I removed it and sure enough the roll pin was snapped into thee pieces. Welded it up and now it feels better then I ever remember so it was probably in bad shape for quite a wile. I was worried the trans was going the way it was getting continually worse. I’m going to pick up a new boot and a new dog point pin wile I’m at it for peace of mind. This tractor was beat on before I took possession and its a nice feeling to save it. Searching this site gave me a lot good info on bringing it back. Thanks. 1
