953 nut 59,735 #1 Posted July 12 We’re simply nutty over today’s honoree, National Pecan Pie Day on July 12. It’s pretty easy to get behind a day dedicated to one of our favorite desserts. Indeed, 90% of Americans surveyed believe eating a slice of pie is one of life’s simple pleasures, indulging in 186 million commercially sold pies every year! People who prefer pecan pie over the many other types of pies describe themselves as thoughtful and analytical. clueless 3,222 #3 Posted July 12 I pronounce it the correct way, my 5th grade teacher told us how. She was from the south as I and she was at least 110 years old then in 1962, so I'm sure she was around when the first Pecan tree was planted. Back in the 1970's when we would visit my dad's side of the family in Sherman, NY, my Aunt Julie would always LOVE the big Folgers can full of pecans that my dad would give her. I don't know if it was an Ohio thing (where I was born and lived for the first 11 years of my life and where my parents were born), but it was always "Pee Can". Back in the early 1980's I was working with some good old boys in the oil fields in Eastern TX, and my one older coworker (who was a really great guy so I didn't mind), when I said "Pee Can", he said "You dang dumb Yankee!! It's 'Puh Cawn'! ". I deferred to him ever since then, although I slip now and then. Since my wife mostly grew up in GA, AL, and WV, she promptly corrects me. Growing up, if there was a choice between pecans (puh-CAWNS) and walnuts (can you even mispronounce this??), we would always have pecans (puh-CAWNS). I understand the health benefits of walnuts, but compared to pecans (puh-CAWNS), walnuts taste like dirt. (Your results may vary). Mom was raised all over the south, so she naturally leaned towards pecans (puh-CAWNS). Dad came from NY, but spent the vast majority of his life in Oklahoma. I'm not sure if he like pecans (puh-CAWNS) before he married my mom..... One of my favorite ways to eat pecans (puh-CAWNS) is brush them with melted butter, sprinkle them with garlic powder, then stick them in the oven and hopefully get them roasted exactly to the point where the just about melt in your mouth without being burned.
