ebinmaine 72,988 #1 Posted July 11 Take a quick listen to the video. This engine has virtually no compression and it sounds like it's spitting back out through the carb. 20250711_181904.mp4

That and time will stick an intake valve... my 854 was just like that when I got it.... After removing the head, roll it over a couple of seconds & watch the valves for up & down movement......

ri702bill 9,533 #5 Posted July 12 It could be that there is a chunk of carbon on the seat keeping the valve from closing....
Pullstart 67,042 #6 Posted July 12 Rylee’s Screamin’ Jimmy had the valve keeper come loose somehow one time. That’s the way I bought it. I replaced the valve and keepers and was good to gol sometimes you don’t know until you dig in.
JoeM 8,429 #7 Posted July 12 Looks like your going in EB! they talk a little about this in this post. the mention looking through the exhaust port and watching the valve.

The intake valve isn't moving. This one won't be fixed for now. The cylinder bore is badly worn and seriously out of taper top to bottom. 1
squonk 43,939 #9 Posted July 12 What tractor is that on?
kpinnc 14,712 #10 Posted July 12 Well it's a standard bore at least. You got room to get it back to round hopefully.
ri702bill 9,533 #11 Posted July 12 "Does not play well with others"..... but it may be freed up rather easliy. A good dose of MMo or PB on the stem so it can wick down into the guide - Turn the crank to a few degrees before TDC on the compression stroke so that the tappet is down. Gently rotate the valve while pushing down - it should pop onto the seat. Repeat as necessary....

Replacement engine of course. 45 minutes ago, ri702bill said: it may be freed up rather easliy It's not stuck. The valve lifts right out. I'd say the keepers have come un-keepered. ri702bill 9,533 #14 Posted July 12 (edited) Unkept keepers!!! Possibly installed upside down. Did the valve spank and bounce off the head?? Edited July 12 by ri702bill

They should call those "swear tabs" or something like it. Keepers... More like throwers! Make you wanna throw the whole engine out the window. At least on my K161 anyway. Never had that much trouble on a big block.
Handy Don 14,129 #17 Posted July 12 (edited) On the advice of an “old hand” small engine guy, I invested in a “Briggs”-style valve spring compressor. Worked like a champ on the K181. It adjusts to different diameters independently for top (spring only), and bottom (keeper). The “compressor” screw is very fine-threaded so it takes a bunch of turns to compress the spring, but it gives a very handy “handle” when removing or inserting the spring/keeper. The grip is enough to tilt the compressed spring/keeper so it aligns with the valve stem so you can remove or insert the valve easily. squonk 43,939 #18 Posted July 12 I use the "C" clamp style. Keeps the valve against the seat. Then a dab of grease on the keeper groove of the valve and on the keeper. A pencil magnet and a tiny straight blade screwdriver. I also have the block on the bench and tilted so gravity assists on getting the keeper in place.

I double nutted it also. Edited July 13 by Retired Wrencher

I still want to find that too, but I had been keeping two of those head gaskets on hand, and I've been searching the garage for months unable to find the second spare. I forgot that I tore the head off that JD engine when I was trying to put it in the 855, and I never replaced it in my parts stock.
