B-80 no spark in start position

Recommended Posts

Sigvald

Greetings!

I inherited my father’s 1975 b-80 when he passed a few years ago.  He bought this tractor when I was 3 months old.  I have many memories of riding this my entire life.
A couple of years ago I was using it to haul trailers full of dirt.  I ran out of gas and then I never started again.  I finally got around to trying to fix it today.

i couldn’t get it to start using a little starter fluid so I had a pretty good guess that it was a spark/ignition issue.

i hooked up my in-line spark checker and there is no spark with the key in the “start” position.   However, when I release the key to the run position the spark checker will flash a few times while the engine spins down.
I’m trying to diagnose this using my multimeter but I could really use a wire diagram.   Or, if someone would be kind enough to point me in the right direction. I quick search of the forum and I couldn’t find what I needed.   I suspect my problem isn’t unique.
thanks for your help!

Click on the tractor in the link and you can view the wiring from the page that comes up. Also there as a pdf file.

Sounds like your ignition switch has failed.

If you have a jumper feed the coil (+) with battery + when you go to start. Remove jumper when it starts.

Thanks!  I saw that link to the diagram on someone else’s post but when I downloaded it it was an empty file.
Trying to trace the wires under the fuel tank while getting eaten by mosquitos was very frustrating.  I’m excited to get this running tomorrow!

Great to see an old trusty family Wheel Horse being loved by a second generation. With the key in the on position see if you have voltage to the ignition coil + terminal, sounds like there will be. Now see if voltage is present while it is in the start position. If there is not voltage as @gwest_ca suggested a small jumper wire from the ignition coil + to the Battery + will allow the engine to be started and a new 103990 ignition switch should solve the problem.

:text-welcomeconfetti: and thanks for keeping your pa’s relic in the family!  So many inheritees asking how much it’s worth… :sad-pacing:  It’s worth more in your garage, than in your pocket!

Thanks to everyone’s help!

I installed the new ignition and she cranked right up!  Needed a new battery.  I’ve been jumping it off my other tractor.
I can’t wait to put this back to work
