They don't abide by the same rules as the rest of us, for example no well, no septic and no bothersome inspections, just do it.
Pullstart 66,598 #4 Posted July 6 The powers that be allow those freedoms. It’s nice they did it on their property, paid for probably in cash. No bank, no debt. As a land owner who drives a 300,000 mile truck with no payment and wears rags for clothes most days, I’m preserving the land at any cost. If I didn’t, I’d have this field growing houses at my back door and I couldn’t do a dang thing about it. I can’t tell you the amount of vultures trying to buy my land now that it’s public record I’m the owner. If I just sold 5 acres to everyone who’s asked so far, I’d need more land to sell!

squonk 43,714 #7 Posted July 6 They are starting to run out of "country" around me. Tree lots disappearing in lieu of more land to grow crops or raise manure producers to fertilize the crops. Then with 15 or so kids they are running out of farmers to buy out so they are starting to buy homes up on the fringes of the village. Almost everyday there is a parade of honey wagons, sprayers and gravity wagons past my house with kids driving them that look no older than 10!

It's going to get much worse with the uncontrolled population growth.

squonk 43,714 #11 Posted July 6 Around here it's the Mennonites more then the Amish. They are or have been buying up everything they can with seemingly unlimited funds. The local farmers who have sold their farms and moved away didn't even have to advertise. Just named their price and SOLD! There are 3 locally owned Mennonite establishments I frequent. Top quality service from all. My only gripe I really have is before mentioned children driving huge tractors over 40 MPH and the fact they only hire folks from within so the tire store for example can install a tire or change your oil but that's it. No one is really trained. Farm and Hardware store is bursting with tractors, trailers and 0 turns on the lot. And they have every Milwaukee and Dewalt tool under the sun on the shelves

My thought is that all the citizens should be treated the same regardless of their religion, but some are exempt from much of the laws and regulations. Using the school for example, the students will be bused there at everyone’s expense and we had no say in the matter. Running duplicate transportation systems for each special interest is something that just isn’t fair to the property tax payer. Most people like the idea of limiting the growth of housing in a rural setting, but ask yourself where are all of those from large families going to live. Not hardly, they are exempt from many rules. When the Ag Dept. went to direct deposit only for handing out free money, many Amish had to open accounts at banks. He also said it was the only thing that gained value no matter what the economy does. Hang on tight Kevin. Don't ever stop. 2

I have a friend that retired from the Ag Dept., she let me know the real story. When a new program came out, guess who was the first in line? Yes, they take any and all program benefits. They enroll in Clean & Green to lower the property tax, even farms of less than 10 acres are eligible if it generates at least $2000 per year of income. I don't have a big problem with the Amish, but after taking off the rose colored glasses I see many things that should be different. I am now completely surrounded by Amish and they treat me well and I do things for them.

I get mail 42 wanting to buy it in the last couple of years. Don't remember how many I got before I started saving them. Most offer less then half the listed tax value, I have it so I don't have anybody there. One of my cousins owns my grandfathers house on the other side and another cousin owns the open farm land across the road.
