Recommended Posts

ebinmaine

Where can we get the thrust bearings, washers and top lock ring/snap rings for a 520 splayed forward front axle?

Item numbers 44, 45, and 42 below.

Let me check. I used to sell them. I might have a set hiding somewhere.

Bob if you have a set left to sell I'll take em.

I have three of these axles to recondition.

Eric - how are the axle bores?? They tend to get egg shaped - top pattern is opposite of bottom. Are the spindle shafts well worn?? They can be welded up and cut to work.

I have done several axles where I drill & ream the bores for bronze bushings, and the center pivot as well.

The spindles have some wear. Nothing major.

The axle bores I haven't checked yet.  Ran outta energy...

We did one ream & bushings install. Maybe two?

I have the tool and bushings for the center bore.

I'd have to get a larger reamer if the side bores are bad.

I use the old thrust washers on top of the axle to take up some of the slop and to help keep dirt out.

I saw you'd mentioned that in a thread somewhere.  Good idea.

For thrust bearings, I recommend the Koyo brand over INA as the cage is better.

Could one of you find fellas tell me how to clean out the tie rod ends without damage? They are all tight. They all moved fine. They're just really gunky. Easy as brake clean or multiple sprays of penetrating oil? Then refill with grease?

My first reaction would be to check that the brake clean doesn’t have a bad affect the rubber covers--unless those are already out of the way.

Some while ago I bought a can of the Lucas Red ’n Tacky spray grease with a straw for getting into tiny places.  So far I’m pleased.

The rubber covers on these are not a true cup shaped boot. They are more like a saucer with a hole in the middle that sits up against the rod end joint. Those are easy enough to remove.

I've heard the term, spray grease. But I've never actually seen a can of it. Might be handy to have so I can fill up some of the cavity before I pop the grease gun on.

It comes out like a foam that sticks to anything and then the propellent goes out of it and it settles down to be a thickish greasy film. Looks like a wet wicked witch of the West.

I wouldn’t use it anywhere I could reach with a grease gun or a small tongue depressor (my go to grease application tool)--too expensive--but just great for bearings and deep joints.

Can looks like this:
