Vacuum pulse fuel pump

Hi all, Happy Father's Day,   cleaned up the fuel pump for my 856 . Ordered a kit from Now and Then . Had a bunch of crud in it, couple cycles in ultrasonic cleaner and then put both halfs of housings on glass and sandpaper, 220 grit. Put some blue marker on and moved it around in figure 8s you can see the progress in pic's. Put more marker on last pass on 800 grit , cleaned up nicely,.  Used  220, 400, 800 grit sandpaper

Very nice work!  Does anyone know why Kohler didn't use these pumps on all their engines?  Is this style pump not capable of supplying enough fuel for a 16 HP engine?  I've got modern pulse pumps on 16 and 17 HP twins.  Just curious.

Maybe the earlier ones were less powerful? 

Maybe a marketing thing for Kohler? 

Maybe a production agreement too.

Seems they were used on the older models with the fuel tank mounted above the engine. The fuel pump on the twin Kohler is on top of the engine and the tank is under the seat so there is no net-positive-suction pressure which would make the pump have to work very hard.
