cod 121 #1 Posted June 8 Just out of curiosity, is there a chance that the engine below: http://newhavenpower.com/Kohler_CH18S.html could replace an aging Kohler M-18 on a 418-A tractor? I'm not great at rebuilding motors but I think I could handle an engine swap. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!
oldlineman 1,513 #2 Posted June 8 not an expert but I see it has a 1 in shaft, that would be a small problem I think, but there are ways around that.
pfrederi 18,547 #3 Posted June 8 Real question is dimensions will it fit under the hood
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,386 #4 Posted June 9 Maybe you could make a mockup of the dimensions on cardboard and cut out to see if it would fit. The dimensions are on page 5 of this service manual
8ntruck 7,610 #5 Posted June 9 . I'm guessing that the height might be an issue. The 1" shaft can be taken care of with a bushing for the output pulley. Double check the height of the crankshaft from the mounting surface of the engine. Ideally, you will want to place the crank of the new engine in the same location as the old engine. If you are using the PTO to run an implement, you will want to confirm that the new engine will be able to take the thrust load on the crankshaft generated by the PTO clutch. Good luck.
midpack 991 #6 Posted June 9 I used an electric PTO with an M18 that didn't have the thrust bearings. That could solve the 1" shaft problem too.
WH1618speed 542 #7 Posted June 9 I would look into a Vanguard; we have a 23 hp under a 520-H, and it works perfectly. It also has the 1 1/8 shaft
cod 121 #8 Posted June 9 Thanks for the responses, and with Gary's help the manual has a dimension page and it looks like it comes with 1.125 PTO plus it will fit under the 418 hood. The height of the PTO is roughly the same as the M-18 and one set of mounting holes (7.25") will line up with the mounting plate the M-18 rests on. I suspect I'll have to make a new mounting plate and I need to see what the muffler would look like. I think it mounts lower than the M-18 but I'd prefer to not "customize" the hood.
