Achto 29,223 #11 Posted June 6 (edited) As fast as those square bodies rusted out, I'm surprised that there are any left at all. Specially the '73 - '74, most of them rusted out just in time for the bicentennial celebration. Don't get me wrong, I grew up with and like the square bodies. Working in a auto body shop in the 80's - '90's you would not believe how many square body rust-o-rations that I did on them. Basically keep the roof, hood, and bed floor. Replace all the other panels. Same era of Ford's trucks were not as bad. Still good for some cab corners, box sides, and maybe some doors or fenders. Dodge trucks were the only ones I saw that rusted from the top down. Seriously how does the top horizontal surface of the fenders rust out before the wheel openings. History of the GM Side Saddle Gas Tank Defect - The Center for Auto Safety All people wanted to talk about was the Pinto fire issue but that was paled by this one but the rug was big and powerful. Get the optional dual fuel tanks and basically the danger was doubled. When they finally changed the design an ad stuck in my mind because of a comment my Dad made. It was a full page ad where Chevy touted their 'new ideas for the years truck', fuel tank inside the frame for safety and dual tanks with the fillers on the same side Fords idea for a new pickup.....a tethered gas cap. Of course, the whole story of the Pinto was never really told well. If you owned a wagon you were pretty safe. The issue came from a run of sedans build with the longer rear bumper bolts for a wagon, because the line ran out of the shorter ones, and had a surplus of the long ones.
