Wobbling shifter in A-100

Recommended Posts

TonyToro

Hey everyone…a friend of a friend has an A-100 and he was told I mess around with WheelHorse tractors. Lol

So he contacted me yesterday to say that his tractor that he bought new now has a wobbly shifter. I haven’t worked on one of these yet. I just looked at a diagram for the transmission but can’t find a diagram that shows a shifter. Before I tell him yeah I’ll take a look, I figured I would research a little. If anyone has encountered this and knows the fix that would be helpful as well. Any help on this would be appreciated.

wobbly shifter.

The Peerless shifter is held in place by a roll pin through the shift lever and the aluminum housing.   :scratchead:    Could be the cast aluminum housing has a crack in it.

Find out what model number he has and download the manual to the transmission before you do anything else.

You haven't "baptized yourself" into the world of garden tractors fully until you've been inside a Peerless transmission! :banana-wrench:

Three easy bolts and the whole shifter assembly comes out. Splitting the cases can get hairy.

Good morning. Thank you for the break down of serial number and date.

The machine is coming to my house for the weekend. I’ll get some pictures of the progress.

Thank you to all for the help!

I had a few spare minutes tonight. Took the seat and seat pan off. Looks like someone was already in the transmission. There is blue gasket sealant around the shifter and gear case. The three bolts appear to have been thread from the inside? I can see threads around the shifter cover??

While Anthony and his friend were working on the new pulling tractor I took the shifter apart. Turned out the bolts were 1/4”. They came out easily and then I scrapped all the permatex off… lol

i have to order a few little parts and should be good.

I had some time today to search for parts… between a few places I found everything I need. I also found a “kit” on eBay… looks right but I can’t find what this stock number goes to. Can anyone cross this over for me?  Tecumseh number 784018A

I think this is the transmission you should have - model 662

A Google search of the 784018A shows different transmission models using that part.

I think you are correct with the transmission model. I just happened to find this kit and looks like the right pieces but when I searched I couldn’t find models that it fit. More than likely it wouldn’t fit this transmission and would be my luck going by price I would have bought it and then wouldn’t work out. Lol

I found all the parts for a bunch of different vendors. I’ll get them ordered up and hopefully get it back together this weekend.

Thank you for the help…it’s really appreciated!!👍

Success! The A-100 is good and tight now. It was super hot and I was thirsty while working on this… lol

Installed a few NOS parts and used Lucas Grease. It’s tight and smooth now.

Thank you everyone for all the help along the way.
