transmission pulley spinning freely

Recommended Posts

Beerad

Hey all, I am new to red square and the forums. Trying to  resurrect my neighbors Raider 12, 6 speed. Got a question that I think I know the answer to. My transmission pulley is spinning freely when I'm in gear. The shaft connection is good, I can see the shaft turning with the pulley. This not good correct? Means drive shaft is broken? Have not worked on a transmission before not sure if its worth fixing or I could even get parts if I need to. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

I'm thinking the most likely scenario is:

The hi-lo shifter is between gears. If it is the input shat will drive nothing. The hi lo fork gear will between the gears an won't be driving anything. Try shifting between hi and lo. Another possibility it the hi lo fork is bent /broken which is pretty common. If that's the case it has to be torn down.  Also there is a key in the main cluster gear that may have broken.

Here is a thread with rebuilding the trans and videos.

Are you sure it is in gear?   Like Mike said, the hi/lo may be in neutral or even the 1,2,3,R shifter may have lost the set screw that keeps it engaged with the shifter forks possibly keeping it in neutral.   There is also a small roll pin that locks the hi/lo shifter to the shaft. I have seen those sheared of when shifting a stuck hi/lo.   I would pull both these shifter levers and make sure the forks are in gear and the hi/lo shaft it turning.

:text-welcomeconfetti:Lots of friendly help here.

New bearings and some new gears, plus many good used parts are available for that transmission.

The raider 12 is a good tractor.

thx you guys for the advice. I checked the hi/ lo shifter and it seems to be properly engaged, and the gear shift definitely feels like its in gear.  Also just to fill out he picture I can move the transmission pulley with my hand when the gears are engaged. regarding the set screw  for the main gear shift and the roll pin for hi/ lo shift, I guess how do I get to them do I have to open the transmission?

Set screw for the shifter is here. It's broken off in this picture:

I'm betting that hi lo fork is bent /broken and the hi lo gear isn't engaged with anything. With the main shifter in any gear and the hi lo lever all the way one direction or the other it will feel like it's engaged but it's not and that would cause your exact issue.

The hi/lo shifter shaft is shown here in Mikes picture.    The lever has been removed and only the shaft with the roll pin hole remains.  I had one of these hi/lo shafts drop down a small amount and it would not shift. I actually put a thin washer under the lever collar to hold it up a bit and it shifted OK.
