peter lena 10,082 #76 Posted March 4 @Pullstart looks like a time capsule , personally would get , a penetrating oil recovery going on that paint , no rubbing of any kind , just let it soak in for weeks and retain ORIGINAL PATINA , would gently rub that stage down with clean MINERAL OIL soaked cloth , again no hard surface drag , you want to save whats there , will typically be in a perfect darker stage , rest of mechanical set up , lubrication drainage / refresh , especially fuel system , from tank to carb , like as much metal line as you can get , eliminate rubber hose , would go step by step , helped a guy with a similar old BOLENS , Wisconsin engine , that came out very well , good luck with it , pete
Pullstart 71,356 #77 Posted March 11 I had a mini competition last year with @Andy N. to see who could run out of fuel the fastest at @WHX?? plow day. His 2 cylinder aircraft fuel sipper and my 16 horse one lunger with a tiny tank were very close competition. Today, I believe I increased my capacity. I might need some longer head bolts and some spacers to get the bottom a bit higher for better gravity feed to the carb.
Pullstart 71,356 #78 Posted March 11 I found this old fuel cap with a blowed out gasket, and some bracketeering materials and started fabbing a little tink tink too. I love watching them flop around, and they are practical to keep rain out in the rare occasion a tractor is outdoors when it rains. 1 3
Pullstart 71,356 #79 Posted March 12 The scrapper flapper works! The new drive belt is also amazing compared to the old one.

And that M18 is more of a gas guzzler than sipper. 1
Pullstart 71,356 #81 Posted 11 hours ago After this year’s spring plow day, I couldn’t keep a belt on the Speedex, it kept jumping off! The Lever Steer started to bother my shoulder at Uncle Jim’s the other weekend and I haven’t fixed the steering either, so I decided to do some work on Speedy tonight. I thought that the set screw style trunion that adjusts the clutch throw (sliding engine) was slipping, so I pulled it off and put a 7/16”-20 die over it. Now I will have positive affirmation of the adjustment.
Pullstart 71,356 #82 Posted 11 hours ago However, I’m glad I did a test fire because the belt still popped off the pulley system and I saw the engine pulley quite out of round! It’s cracked bad! Inferior steel anyway. Unfortunately I don’t have any Wheel Horse pulleys close in size, being 1” bore and about 4” diameter. Off to TSC tomorrow! Plow day locally on Saturday!
Pullstart 71,356 #83 Posted 3 hours ago Also in preparation, the furrow side big fat front tire was flat, and both were tubed when I put them on last year. Since these Carlisle’s have such a rigid bead area, I can only imagine I did it for future fluid filling ease. I didn’t have any small enough valve stems for the holes in the wheels, so I drilled it out to 5/8” and ran a multi piece race car valve stems set.
Pullstart 71,356 #84 Posted 3 hours ago Pictures for clarity. There is a large spring in front of the engine that pushes it back. The clutch system pushes the engine forward, tensioning the belt.
