goldeagle 31 #1 Posted May 15 I have a K341 engine on my C165 which I am struggling to adjust to make sure it is running optimally. There is a fair amount of hunting/surging in particular when it is under load (mower deck operating). I also tend to get some popping/back-firing normally when I reduce the throttle before switching off. Looking at the manual these symptoms could either be running too lean, running too rich or governor needing adjustment. I have attempted several time to make adjustments to the carb and governor following the instructions (which is challenging when different terms are used to describe the same item!) but finding it difficult to work out if it is making a difference. Carb adjustments talk about turning the screws until the engine slows down, but how do you tell it is slowing down, just by the sound? I normally end up setting the carb at the recommended starting figures. Can anyone offer any tips from their experience, either any other things I can look out for to help determine the issue, or any tips for making adjustments? Appreciate any advice. Included a few pics for information.

Many of us have had poor luck with after market... it is aftermarket but it was one of the 'expensive' ones from isavetractors which I hope means it is better quality than the really cheap Chinese carbs you can pick up off Amazon

I won't use another aftermarket carb. Have you rebuilt your own carb?

Can get it to run full throttle OK but below that she doesn't work smoothly. Since it is a hydro having full throttle work is sort of OK... Yes I adjust by listening to the engine. Some of the after market carbs have dirt in them right out of the box a cleaning may or may not help Edited May 15 by pfrederi
pfrederi 18,471 #6 Posted May 15 On close look something is wrong with your control linkage. On big blocks the throttle cable goes to the lower end of the rocker arm mounted on the air shrouded. There is solid link from the top end of the rocker to the pivot arm (where you set top end speed) This may or may not add to you issues.
peter lena 9,165 #7 Posted May 16 @pfrederi like your picture referral , that set up to me is a perfect , opportunity for extension spring assist , often refer to that with any cable draw problem area . done it so often don't even think about it , of course penetrating oil on / in cabling , then finish with , super lube hydraulic oil , use any related hole as a spring pull point , often add a perforated metal trim piece , for a multiple hole connection . remember , to have spring ASSIST TO CLOSE , LEVER PULL ? that way you will always have a spring slide assist ! usually go over every step / stage of INTENDED FUNCTION , tweak , adjust , lubricate , better / worse ? there has to be a gain , in the motion point , all my cables are pulled to close , with small coiled springs , entire motion is assisted / lubed . easy to experiment with this chronic problem . also like hydraulic oil on a HEIM JOINT , total movement ease , pete
