New tires

Have a 1994 314-8 from 1994 that needs new tires.it has 23x9.5x12 turf tires that are original equipment.would like to get tires that have a more aggressive tread but won’t tear up any lawn.the only tires that I can find in this size are all turf tires.there seem to be many in 23x10.5x12 but there doesn’t seem to be enough clearance especially if I want to put chains on for plowing.owned this tractor for 30+years and recently fell off mowing the sand mound hill.glad I still had the kill seat switch working.will ag tires tear up the lawn?the size available for ag tires are 23x8.5x12.any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

There is proabably more size variance between between tire manufacturers than a one step change in tire size. (8.5 to 9.5 for instance)  Deestones are notoriously smaller than Carlilse  even though they are marked the same size...WH used 8.50 for many years on C series and older...

@Toolmanbill  not having any tire issues , but have been using a light silicone grease  on the entire  bead sealing area  , started doing that  with a  very slow leaking  tire  , was just a slight rubber  fit to wheel  issue, than a  solid over pressure  sealing slam , obvious  wheel rust debris , preventing  seal . pete

I always recommend these when asked. Carlisle All-Trails, although the company name has changed to Carlstar now.
When I picked up these they only came in 23x10.5 and 23x8.0, not sure if that’s still the case. The 8.0’s are mounted on standard width wheels and my 10.5’s are on wide wheels like the 520-H’s come with. I can’t explain the height diff.

I switched to these - they are golf cart tires mounted on 8.5” wide rims. I don’t even need chains when I plow snow.

Same tires I have in my 416. Pretty impressed.  Doesn’t tear up grass either that I have noticed

It's a bit ironic and maybe even counterintuitive but in my experience, aggressive tread doesn't really tear up turf, tires that lose traction do.

More aggressive tread of course tends to grip better. Turfs in most flavors will spin easily.

But if you spin with knobby tires it will dig a hole quick!

Having an issue posting links for some reason.

Try searching Carlisle All Trail 23x8 instead of Carlstar.

It’s a subtle but important note that the contact patch of a tire can affect the quality of the lawn.

Turfs distribute the load to lessen the soil compaction. Ags, by design, concentrate the load on a smaller area.

EVERY style of tire embodies a series of compromises aimed at getting the best overall result for its design goals.

I found 5 similar tread tires in  23 x 10.50 x 12.

Vision at Summit Racing

Duro Tire at eBay

Ocelot at Amazon

CTW Predator at eBay

Wanda at Golf Cart Tire Supply

I have Carlisle All Trails II  25 x 900 x 12 on my 316-8, but I did raise the rear fender 1 3/4".

Seems as though there is only one inch of clearance between the edge of my 9.5 inch tires and the tractor.I think thats too close to use 10.5 tires if I need to use chains.will I be compromising traction if I use 8 inch tires?carlisle only seem to come 8 inch or 10.5.

Also do you guys also put tubes in?

Mine are tubeless and don’t run tubes unless they have to be. I don’t run my tractors in any terrain that I need to worry about tubes

Here is the difference between tubeless and tubed. These wheels came off my 520-H in 2019.

I replaces the tires after I bought it, the clean rim was tubeless. and the rusty one had a tube.

Don't know how long the tube was in there.

I run rubber chains on 10.50  on a Charger 12 no clearance issues.  However if your drive way is gravel and sloped I would suggest you get some 6.00 x 12 tires (on the 5.inch rims) add 2 link v chains and weights for winter use.  This set up pushes a 56" blade and will drag a M16 down  in heavy snow before I lose traction.

Don't know how long the tube was in there.

I would have guessed just the opposite thinking that any moisture out of a compressor would be contained by the tube rather than rusting the rim. :dunno:

I've  change a lot of tires with tubes that the rust had the tube attached to the rim. The tubes don't seal out moisture at the stem.

The moisture enters via the less-than-tight seal around the inflation valve. Rain, washing, etc.

I don’t run chains on my 23x10.5’s, so I can’t answer that.
Currently I’m about 2500 miles away from home, I’ll try to remember to take a look and a pic of my tires and the clearance when I get back home Friday.
