uk175horse 19 #1 Posted May 8 hi guys, I have a k341 engine on c175 that's barely starting. Was running pretty well a few weeks ago, then a week ago seemed to be misfiring/running rough and now took 30 seconds or more turning over to start then died in a few seconds. Took the air filter out and soaked in fuel! Cleaned all the carb and no different . Now took the head off and it's very carbonated . Also head gasket looks damaged ? Thinking I just clean it up and new gasket but why the fuel in air filter??
ineedanother 1,542 #2 Posted May 8 (edited) That carbon isn't terrible but you definitely need a head gasket and should probably take care of a couple fairly simple tasks while you replace that. As far as the fuel in the air cleaner is concerned, excessive flooding of the carb likely due to a stuck or badly adjusted float that isn't closing that jet. It could also be a badly worn jet. squonk 42,934 #3 Posted May 8 If something happened to the intake valve it could push compression pressure back through the carb backwards.
uk175horse 19 #4 Posted May 8 thanks, I replaced the head gasket last year already and followed the bolt order and torque so not sure why it's so warped . I took a look at the float earlier and wasn't damaged but not sure if the pin that closes the jet is ok, could be worn . The idle /main adjustment screws looked quite worn . I've got a new aftermarket carb on order now to test . What were the other simple tasks I should check out?

Doesn't seem to be stuck or warped when I turned it by hand, not sure if the carbon caused a bad seal
stvski80085 187 #6 Posted May 9 You may want to sand the head level again while it’s off. Search this site for how to do it. It’s easy. steve 1
oliver2-44 10,454 #7 Posted May 9 In this picture see the clean outer edge of the piston. That typically means there is some blowby. Not terrible, I’ve run one like that from many years. While you have it open it would be a good time to pull and lap the valves, then adjust there clearance. 1

uk175horse 19 #9 Posted May 11 Flattened the head , Just waiting on a valve spring compression tool now to get the valves out and take a look !
uk175horse 19 #10 Posted Monday at 06:53 PM Lapped the valves, cleaned up all the carbon and new head gasket , new aftermarket carb (the slightly better adjustable type) and started right up ! Running nicer than before and haven't fully tuned the carb yet. Aftermarket carb was bit of a pain though as the throttle linkage is the ball type not just a hole, so had to modify it , and the choke linkage is wrong so can't use the lever. Hard to find the walbro whg carb repair kit anywhere, especially here in UK! Thanks all for the advice
