Jayoutdoors 98 #1 Posted May 5 (edited) What could have happened and how do I fix? I put in reverse to back off trailer. Suddenly clutch went to "floor" and shifter is stuck in middle of pattern with trans in reverse... Edited May 5 by Jayoutdoors
WHX?? 51,909 #2 Posted May 5 (edited) Pull the shifter and look for the neutral H pattern. Use some screw drivers to try and get back into neutral. Somebody will post a pic I can't find it in this mess... Edited May 5 by WHX?? 1

daveoman1966 3,841 #4 Posted May 5 Common problem--- The 'dog point screw' at the base of the shift lever (ball) has either broken off or needs adjusting. Pull the dust cover and have a look-C. As WHX sez---wiggle the shift forks around, then adjust the NIPPLE of the dog point screw, using the jam nut to lock it in place after getting it set right. 1 5
953 nut 60,348 #5 Posted May 5 This thread has you covered on the shifter being stuck. Thew clutch going to the floor could be ther clutch return spring (highlighted in drawing) or a linkage that came undone. 2
peter lena 9,309 #6 Posted May 5 @Jayoutdoors agree with @daveoman1966 on the dog point set screw , another vital point is a trans frain / drive around flush out , like a hi mileage ATF FLUID , have a neighborhood , CUL DE SAC , drive around area ? use every gear / range , let that cut / clean / flush out the gearbox . also like CLIMBING GEAR OIL , check bottle specs , also go after entire clutch linkage , movement points , like a penetrating oil first , make the rust run out , then red aerosol grease tube extension detailing . new shift boot with a wide tie wrap just ABOVE THE BEST HOLDING POINT to shifter rod , grease the under / inside of boot so it slides over the irregularities on top of trans , since doing that , all my shift boots are happy . also always bring a small tool bag , lubricant on any road test , just sayin , pete 1
Pullstart 67,042 #7 Posted May 5 This is generally only an issue with 3 speeds of the early flavor. Let us know if it works for your 8 speed! 1

SylvanLakeWH 28,589 #11 Posted May 7 Raise front end up a foot or so. There's a hump in the trans that prevents all oil from draining. Drain from hex bolt on bottom. Yes flush with diesel and fill with 80/90 gear oil. Replace the rubber cap on the shifter so water isn't a problem...

Letting drip drain now. New boot on order. 3
