Brockport Bill 1,933 #1 Posted April 27 we rescued a C165-8 a couple years ago that had been sitting outdoors for I am guessing a few years -- it has the 16 hp kohler engine - I am not familiar with tractors life history. The tractor has only been run a couple of hours since then. We have changed engine and tranny oil, fuel filter, new coil, new condenser, new points, plug, cleaned carb, etc...........Trying to detemine the conditon of the engine and its future viability?????? It has some white smoke and some mild "putt/putt" sounds. However, what I am trying to determine is the engine has what seems to sound like a sorta high frequency "whine" to it. This is not a sound I have heard before on the various WH tractors i have owned. I am not very expert in the insides of engines. Was wondering any theories on what this sound might be and the implications and future for the engine? thanks, Bill
ebinmaine 72,445 #2 Posted April 27 @kpinnc ? I believe your whining sound is likely bad balance gears. Get. Them. Out. Do NOT run the engine like that. It's already on borrowed time.....

Obviously we can't hear what you do. And, all 12-16hp Kohlers have a small whine just from gear mesh. But if it's more whine than what you're used to, the balance gears would be a good place to look. And no sense leaving them in there. I took them out of my Bronco 14. The small increase in vibration just serves to remind me that the grenades no longer live in my engine. Peace of mind goes a long way to smoothing it out...
