I was cleaning the blue dust off the engine block to "reset" and keep an eye out,

Good plan.   It could be that one belt  got an extra heavy blue coating that is coming off.      :confusion-shrug:       It'll good to see if it continues.

@Alrashid2  only time I use 3rd gear hi range is going up the road for some CUL DE SAC , test driving  or a warm  up of gear oil before draining  , my 3 rd gear starts are very smooth and easy , no screaming  belts and absolutely no wheels off the ground , every related movement  point , works in  quiet smooth operation . do not understand  this issue , 3 ,  12 horse  tractors , no noisy belt engagement . also use every gear / range while out there , always bring a small tool kit , aerosol lube . my tractor supply belts  are very good , no issues , all my pulleys and linkage areas , move in silence , steering smooth / solid . just started 2 of my horses , sleeping over a month , started right up , no issues , battery tender , incandescent  heat bulb  under engines . like where  I am , pete

The  clutch on my 310-8 works perfectly. The clutch can be eased in with no grabbing.    I use the TSC wrapped belts.    Note the amount of travel in the idler pulley.  Does your idler pulley have the angled plate behind the belt retainer?   This plate should contact a clutch dampening cylinder that eases the belt into tension.

What size belt did you use? I just replaced my belt on my 312 with a tsc belt and now I have the similar issue as the OP.

Appreciate the advice, brothers. I have read on here that this isn't uncommon, but it's becoming a real problem for me.

My 312-8 clutch is too sensitive. It feels like there is just a quarter inch in movement of the pedal between the clutch being disengaged and it being fully engaged. Every other time, despite constantly practicing and letting off the clutch as carefully and slowly as I can, the tractor jumps forward and oftentimes I get a bit of air on the front wheels!

Today it was too much. Finally got rain so out back is muddy. I was trying to go uphill, slightly to the left, and the whole thing spun out, wheelied, and i smashed the front end into a log I was trying to turn around... I got so much air that is just shot a few feet straight forward because the turning front wheels weren't in contact with the ground! Nearly flipped backwards...

Not sure what to do. No, nothing is catching or grabbing on the pulleys or belt. The pulleys appear to be clean and fine, and the belt is in good shape...

I know these don't have real clutches, it's just loosening/tightening the pulley. Is there anyway to allow the belt to "slip" more? Seems wrong, but could I oil up the pulleys a bit to allow some more slippage? I don't want to create a nuisance or worst, something dangerous.

I have the same tractor, same issue after replacing the belt with a brand new one thats from tsc thats the exact spec. What was your fix?

TSC  5/8 X 82 Aramid blue belt  works great on my 310-8.   Mine does have the clutch damper cylinder on the idler pulley, but  I'm not sure the damper does anything as I can feel and feather the clutch with my foot.

Ok so I have the same belt you have, so I know the belt size is okay. I also found a spring that goes from the actual clutch pedal and attaches behind the dashboard. I assume that was someone's backyard fix to the blown out strut on the clutch. I have a new correct spring clutch coming in from Wheelhorse parts and more today, so ill install that and remove this other spring that is circled in the attached photo.

@Alrashid2    wide open throttle clutch engagement ?  dry rusty  linkage / lever  connections , lots of glairing  areas to me . actually the belts don,t look bad at all. for me  it would be , related pulley  movement , EASE, QUIET , SMOOTH ?  like a 2 stage , trial ? penetrating oil  , for a make the rust run out  , then follow up with red aerosol  grease , BELTS SHOW YOU  WHATS GOING ON  ?  yours are NOT FRAYED OR CRACKED , would also  look  , feel sense the movement ease  to  idler pulleys , regular , lubrication failure  , literally  stops pulley  , adding to issue . clutch pedal , consoul  cross shaft , probably  dry / rusty , enhances , erratic  clutch operation . only suggestions , pete

backyard fix

I think you have found the problem.    With the spring here, I can see where any slop in the clutch linkage would allow the clutch pulley to engage and grab.

Yea the correct spring that goes from the linkage to the trans will be here tonight so after I swap them as long as the rain calms down ill test it and report back.
